SCI Switzerland

Service Civil International (SCI) traces its roots back to the aftermath of World War I, with the inaugural volunteer engagement occurring in Verdun from November 1920 to April 1921. Spearheaded by Swiss activist Pierre Cérésole, individuals from formerly warring nations collaborated in reconstruction projects in war-torn France, aiming to counteract prevailing nationalism and militarism and foster peace between nations.

The organization's journey began in Switzerland, where volunteer missions were initiated in the 1920s, often in response to natural disasters like avalanches and floods. These early endeavors laid the groundwork for later civil service initiatives for conscientious objectors. In 1936, various volunteer groups united into national branches, forming the global network known today as Service Civil International (SCI).

Following World War II, SCI's activities expanded worldwide, reaching Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America. The exchange of volunteers between Western and Eastern Europe commenced in the 1950s and intensified significantly in the 1990s.

Today, SCI continues its peace work through workcamps, a format that evolved from its early volunteer engagements. Themes such as self-government, initiative, shared responsibility, and gender equality have emerged as central issues, reflecting the organization's commitment to fostering a more equitable and peaceful world.
