Why choose SANCCOB?

Founded in 1968 in South Africa, we’ve been dedicated to seabird conservation for over 55 years. Our organization began in response to the Esso Essen oil spill and the urgent need to rehabilitate oiled seabirds—particularly African Penguins. What started in a private home soon grew into a recognized rescue and rehabilitation centre, officially launching as SANCCOB with support from researchers and conservationists. We operate as a non-profit organisation focused on rescuing, rehabilitating, and releasing ill, injured, abandoned, and oiled seabirds, especially endangered species like the African Penguin. Our services support marine wildlife, ecosystems, and conservation-focused partners, and our target audience includes environmental agencies, research institutions, and members of the public who care about marine biodiversity. Our objective is to reverse the decline of seabird populations and, when identified, assist other aquatic species through practical care, research, and public education.
