Online TEFL Certification for Teaching English in Guatemala
by Premier TEFL

Program Overview
To teach English in Guatemala for an employer, foreigners need a work permit from the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare, MINTRAB, and temporary residence for migrant workers from the Instituto Guatemalteco de Migración, IGM. Premier TEFL's online courses, starting with the 120 hour Accredited Online TEFL Course, prepare you for that classroom.
MINTRAB issues permits to foreigners legally in Guatemala who want to work as employees, in up to 20 business days. For worker residence, the IGM lists a signed and legalized employment contract, a Ministry of Labor certification where applicable, a valid passport and a criminal record certificate from your home country or wherever you lived for the last two years. Residence runs for the term of the contract, up to five years.
The 180 hour Government Regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma, Ofqual reference 610/1572/6, is the best fit for Guatemala, and the 120 hour course is the starting option.
Study self paced online with 24/7 access, tutor support, optional live Zoom classes, an instant digital certificate and lifetime job assistance. Enroll online and finish the course before you apply to schools in Guatemala.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to all the most common questions about Premier TEFL.
Do I need a work permit to teach English in Guatemala as a foreigner?
Yes, to work for an employer. The Ministry of Labor, through its foreign worker permits department in the Dirección General de Empleo, issues permits to all foreigners who are legally in Guatemala and want to work in an employment relationship. Employers hiring foreigners are one of its application categories. Processing takes up to 20 business days, and renewals must be filed at least 15 business days before the permit expires.
What residence permit do foreign English teachers need in Guatemala?
The Instituto Guatemalteco de Migración offers temporary residence for migrant workers, with categories for a Guatemalan employer, a foreign employer or self employment. It is granted for the term of the contract, up to five years. You provide a signed and legalized employment contract and a Ministry of Labor certification where applicable, while your employer supplies its tax registration, business licenses and a letter describing the role.
What documents do I need for a residence application in Guatemala?
The IGM asks for an application form, your valid passport with a full legalized copy showing your last entry stamp, a certificate of no criminal or police record from your home country or where you lived the last two years, valid for six months, and a migration movement certificate. Foreign documents must be apostilled or legalized, with a sworn Spanish translation if needed. Once approved, you have 30 days to register your biometric data.
How long can I stay in Guatemala as a visitor before I need a visa?
UK government travel advice says British visitors can stay in Guatemala for up to 90 days without a visa. Under the CA4 agreement, that 90 day period covers Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua together, starting when you enter any of them, and it does not restart when you cross a border. To stay longer than 90 days to work, you must meet Guatemala's entry requirements, and extensions are handled by the Instituto Guatemalteco de Migración.
Which Premier TEFL course is best for teaching English in Guatemala?
The 180 hour Government Regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma, Ofqual reference 610/1572/6, suits most people heading to Guatemala. It is a recognized Level 5 qualification that employers can verify on the UK government register. The 120 hour Accredited Online TEFL Course is the starting option, and the 60 hour Level 5 Teaching Online One to One course adds a focused option if you also plan to teach private students online.
