Online TEFL Certification for Teaching English in Germany
by Premier TEFL

Program Overview
To teach English in Germany, EU, EEA and Swiss citizens can work without a permit, while other nationals need a residence title that allows work, such as a residence permit for employment or for freelance work. Schools in Germany set their own hiring criteria, and a recognized TEFL certificate shows you can plan and run a class.
Germany's Federal Foreign Office says non EU nationals usually apply for a visa at a German mission before entry, though US, Canadian, Australian and New Zealand citizens may apply after arrival. The PAD foreign language assistant program places students from partner countries such as the US and UK in German schools, with an official stipend of 1,000 euros a month.
The 180 hour Government Regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma, Ofqual reference 610/1572/6, is the best fit for Germany, and the 120 hour Accredited Online TEFL Course is the starting option.
You study online at your own pace with 24/7 access, tutor support, optional live Zoom classes, an instant digital certificate and lifetime job assistance after you graduate.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Get answers to all the most common questions about Premier TEFL.
Do I need a visa to teach English in Germany as a US citizen?
You need a residence title that allows work, but you may not need to arrange it before you travel. Germany's Federal Foreign Office says non EU nationals generally need a residence title to take up work and usually apply for a visa at a German mission before entry. Nationals of the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Israel, Japan and South Korea may instead apply for the residence title after arriving in Germany.
Can I teach English in Germany as a freelancer from outside the EU?
It depends on your case. The route is a residence permit for freelance work. Germany's Federal Foreign Office explains that people self employed in the liberal professions can get this permit if they can prove they have the means to fund their project. Applicants over 45 must also show adequate provision for old age. For visa questions, the Foreign Office advises contacting your local German mission, which can confirm the current document list.
What is Germany's foreign language assistant program and who joins?
It is a school program run by the Pedagogical Exchange Service (PAD), which places up to 800 students from abroad in schools across Germany each school year. Partner countries include the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand. Assistants support language teachers for at least 12 lessons a week. You apply in your home country, and the PAD asks you to check exact eligibility with the institution there.
How much do foreign language assistants in Germany receive a month?
Germany's PAD states that assistants currently receive a monthly stipend of 1,000 euros. Placements officially start on September 15 and end on May 31, while assistants from the United States and Taiwan finish on June 30. US applicants apply through the Institute of International Education in New York, and the program is run in Germany by the PAD together with the German American Fulbright Commission.
Which Premier TEFL course is the best choice for teaching in Germany?
The 180 hour Government Regulated Level 5 TEFL Diploma, Ofqual reference 610/1572/6, suits most people heading to Germany. It is a recognized Level 5 qualification, which helps you stand out when a language school compares you with other applicants. If you want a stronger profile for university or international school roles, the 300 hour Level 5 Master TEFL Advanced Diploma, Ofqual reference 6101574X, is the step up.
