Program Overview

Gambia Summer Literacy and Debate Program 2026 under the theme 'Building a Nation of Readers.' The project will promote literacy, creative writing, debate, journalism, and critical thinking among children and young people across The Gambia.

Many children in The Gambia have limited access to quality books, reading programs, and creative learning opportunities. Without sustained literacy initiatives, many young people miss opportunities to strengthen reading comprehension, writing skills, critical thinking, and public speaking.

The program will include a National Primary School Reading Competition, Poetry, Short Story Writing, News Reporting, and Debate competitions; school outreach; reading mentorship sessions; and the establishment and strengthening of Reading Clubs and PEN School Clubs. More than 100 pupils from across The Gambia will directly participate, with many more reached through schools and media coverage.

Objectives:
• Promote a culture of reading among children and youth.
• Improve literacy, creative writing, and communication skills.
• Develop leadership, confidence, and critical thinking.
• Strengthen Reading Clubs and PEN School Clubs nationwide.
