About Peace for Development Refugees Initiative

Established in March 2016 within Kenya's Kakuma Refugee Camp, the Peace for Development Refugees Initiative (PDRI) is a community-based organization dedicated to addressing the unique challenges faced by refugees. Our mission is to create inclusive spaces where individuals from diverse backgrounds unite to promote lasting peace and development. Guided by our motto, "No peace, no bread," we focus on empowering vulnerable groups—especially children, youth, and women—through education, sports, arts, and socioeconomic initiatives. Our programs encompass early childhood education, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) training, and sports activities such as football, baseball, and dodgeball for children under 15. We also prioritize women's empowerment by offering vocational training and income-generating activities to foster self-reliance. Through peacebuilding workshops and community dialogues, we strive to cultivate a harmonious environment where all members can thrive.

Life Changing Experience

Working in Kakuma has definitely been one of the most transformative experiences of my life, and there could not have been a better organization than PDRI to work with. Keep in mind that Kakuma is an incredibly challenging environment, translating literally to "Nowhere," but you will quickly come to fall in love with the place. The entire team is fantastic and goes out of its way to ensure that you can adjust to the environment and make a real impact on the community For a peek into my project, there: Check www.edutechrefuge.com

Grassroots conflict mediation at Kakuma Refugee Camp

I had a very positive experience collaborating with PDRI. I worked with PDRI in their efforts to mediate interethnic conflict, train future mediators and promote the Peace Center Project among the residents of Kakuma Refugee Camp. Throughout this experience, PDRI was by my side providing support and making sure I felt safe. Pascal and the rest of the team are really dedicated and hardworking and I was grateful for all they do. They promote peacebuilding, education for the youth in the camp, IT skills, social media, small business support, etc. I highly recommend volunteering with PDRI and encourage anyone who might be interested to contact the organisation.

Volunteering with an impact

The team of PDRI are truly amazing! Everyone is really nice, tries to help you and is keen to speak to you and get to know you! I was welcomed very warmly and felt that everyone is taking care of me and my safety. I had the possibility to create my workshops as I felt was the right way. I was there for four weeks and felt that there was not enough work for me the whole four weeks so I had a lot of free time.
