Poor student support and unprofessional grievance handling

July 23, 2025by: Claire Bear - Netherlands

Program: 100% Online Cambridge CELTA Course

3

(CELTA online course, July 2025 intake; hosted from Barcelona office). I would not recommend Oxford TEFL to any prospective CELTA trainee. As a mature student and experienced teacher, I joined the course hoping to develop my skills in an objective, professional environment. Unfortunately, my experience was the opposite: I encountered targeted, subjective, and (most importantly) inaccurate feedback from my teaching supervisor, which I tried—repeatedly and professionally—to clarify. The critique was clearly subjective and there was no admittance or humility around this (indisputable) fact. This obviously led me seriously question the professionalism and the objectivity of the centre. Instead of resolving my concerns, management mischaracterised them as “not being able to accept critique,” and the centre was evasive and defensive throughout the grievance process. The irony is that I choose CELTA due to the rigorous critique process - I sincerely hoped it would improve my teaching skills. However, if it is not based in objective truth - it holds no value and I feared I would leave the course a worse teacher than what I started as. I had no faith in their ability to assess, guide or mentor me - and I gave several opportunities for them to graciously accept that perhaps they had been somewhat subjective (I would have actually accepted that; it would have showed humility, professionalism and it would have instilled trust and likely led me to continue in the course, despite the clearly inaccurate feedback I had received). However, my attempts to get clear answers in writing were met with delay, minimisation, and deflection. I was ultimately forced to withdraw from the course due to a lack of transparency, accountability, and professionalism from the entire management team. Even after escalating to Cambridge, I found the process lacked neutrality and simply circled the wagons to protect the centre. I did receive a partial refund after a prolonged dispute, but the experience was stressful, disappointing, and damaging to my trust in both the centre and the wider CELTA brand. If you value fair, objective feedback and a professional approach to student support, I strongly recommend you look elsewhere for your teacher training. I decided to complete the Trinity TESOL instead, and am already impressed with the professionalism displayed by the new provider. It is night and day, so my sincere advice is to avoid OxfordTEFL and their CELTA programme. Feedback and critique is absolutely essential. Objectivity, professionalism, humility and evidence-based feedback are equally essential. OxfordTEFL failed (repeatedly) in that minimum standard.

Completing the online part-time CELTA course was an unforgettable and transformative experience. The journey was challenging yet deeply rewarding, guided by the support of our tutors, Sinem and Billie, whose feedback and encouragement made all the difference. The interactive sessions and collaborative environment made learning both engaging and enriching. The practical teaching practice and detailed feedback helped me refine my skills and grow in confidence as an educator. I’m also thankful to Diana for her career advice and ongoing support as I take the next steps in my teaching career. This course challenges you but leaves you with lasting memories, enhanced confidence, and the tools to succeed as an ESL teacher. I highly recommend it to anyone passionate about teaching.

I recently completed the online part-time CELTA course with Oxford TEFL. I had no teaching experience prior to taking the course, and now I feel confident and well-prepared as an ESL teacher. My course tutors, Billie and Sinem, were wonderful — extremely supportive while always challenging me to improve. Everyone at Oxford TEFL has been a pleasure to interact with, and I especially appreciate the ongoing career services provided by Diana. I would highly recommend Oxford TEFL for anyone interested in the CELTA or other English teacher training courses.

Doing my CELTA with OxfordTefl has been an enriching and rewarding experience. As an international applicant, I had a lot of concerns and questions regarding the credibility of the course but the team at Oxford Tefl graciously resolved all my doubts in a timely fashion. They are not only well renowned but they also have the best online CELTA course module. The tutors are highly skilled professionals. The materials used in class and the input sessions are curated with practical classroom application in mind. The learning environment is wholesome and friendly. You come out of the course a changed person for sure!

Learning online with Oxfordtefl ,,, what a wonderful experience! A Covid positive!!! A mix of nationalities for two hours every day for four weeks - incredible! The guidance, support and teaching from the professional, approachable and friendly tutors was excellent. The four week intensive course is a journey packed full with assignments, lesson planning, lesson observations, afternoon input sessions and teaching. Lots of work, but great preparation for ensuring that the trainee teacher can feel confident that they will be able to teach effectively in their first TEFL job. Thank you Anna, Mike, Tim and Billie.

This is the course you MUST do if you want to become a certified TEFL teacher. I did the 100% Online CELTA program and loved it. Oxford International House is super well prepared to deliver this type of course without letting students feel they are missing the face-to-face teaching benefits. The course is 100% adapted so that you can deliver highly effective lessons. The support you get from teachers is great - they're always there to help you with planning, assignments and general understanding about concepts. The feedback after every teaching practice is honest and useful. You learn every time.

The CELTA course is a very rewarding and intensive course. It is challenging in all the right ways and the feedback given from the excellent tutors really made my experience worthwhile. I met the most wonderful people from all over the world. Now I am so excited to start my teaching journey after completing this course. I hope you enjoy and love it as much as I did!

The course was enlightening, it really helped me improve my teaching skills. The tutors were extremely dedicated ant attentive to our needs. They were very professional and could always identify our strong and weak points. I feel much more confident now, I am glad I had the chance to study some authors that are very important in the field of English teaching. The organisation and the timing were appropriate and the course was tailored to challenge us, but at the same time we were supported and encouraged to do our best. And I think we did. The relationship within the group was friendly and supportive, I have met a bunch of new friends, and I hope we'll keep in touch in the future. The most valuable part was, in my opinion, the teaching practice: that is something I really needed and some suggestions I received from the tutors were really precious.

I can't talk highly enough about this course, from the information provided through the input sessions to the quality and experience of the tutors. The course not only prepares you for ELT through practice and observations, it provides you with someone to talk to about careers as well which I found to be very useful. I would recommend this course to not only beginning teachers but to teachers who have taught for a while too as there will are specific strategies related to ELT that are not as common while teaching in a classroom not related to English as a second language.

A professional team and wonderful tutors you can learn so much from, regardless if you're an experienced teacher or just starting out on that path. I’m glad I chose OxfordTEFL for my professional growth. Also, the encouragement we gave each other as peers throughout the four weeks, especially during the TPs, is something that can't be replicated. It's a demanding and intensive course, indeed, but every second is worth it.

My long cherished dream came true..! I always thought, a face to face CELTA would happen for me only when pigs fly as the centers were far off my place. But here I grabbed it from Oxford TEFL online; and that too with an international community of 19 new friends around the world..! A few of the CELTA alumni said, it's going to squeeze you out.' Yes, it was... But, thus came out the best teacher from within me. The course director and tutors were really patient and prompt in answering to the clarifications. Never taxing; but strict enough to take out the best. Sincere and constructive corrections by the tutors... And even at a bit of improvement, it's all genuine praise and encouragement: that's Oxford TEFL style..! And finally, I felt like, a paradigm shift in my life as a teacher.

I am an experienced and certified Adult Trainer in communication skills and leadership. However, a lot of people have approached me to teach English instead but then I did not want to as I did not have the qualifications to teach. So, I grabbed the opportunity to sign up for the CELTA online course and I am glad I did! What a roller-coaster ride with tons of things to learn as you apply!...thanks to the chance to teach a live class and learn at the same time. I thoroughly appreciate the tutors continuous selfless efforts to make the one-month of intensive training worth every second. What's more is that I got the opportunity to learn with aspiring teachers from across the globe and with tutors from different countries making it a truly international experience.

Don’t look anywhere else

I had the same doubts that everybody before, in the same class as I shared. You don’t know if you can do it, you think you’ll fail several times and your stress tolerance will be tested. But, if you want to become an English teacher or further your career in it, there’s nowhere else to go. Every review you’ll read will mention the words “stress” and “intense” in some form or another. It’s all worth it. It is those things because that’s how good this course is. You get every little ounce of support possible. The teachers want you to pass and show that there’s always an open-door policy. I had no prior teaching experience before this course, and I have a new perspective on it that I was never able to have before. It’s incredibly rewarding to do this kind of work. So, if you’re looking for a challenge in a beautiful city, choose Oxford House in Barcelona.

From my initial interview (with the bubbly and enthusiastic Justin) to our "leaving party" and post-course job search, I have only good things to say about the Oxford House Barcelona staff. All administrative staff, tutors and teachers were extremely friendly and supportive, ready to give help and advice at the drop of a hat. The school itself is bright, spacious, well-equipped, well located and inviting. The timetable is intense but the sense of community at Oxford House helps a lot. During the course, we were teaching adult students ranging in age from early twenties to late sixties/seventies. The groups were enthusiastic and patient. We got great teaching experience and were given continuous feedback and constructive criticism from both peers and tutors throughout the course. I would definitely recommend CELTA at Oxford House BCN for anybody interested in doing the intensive course.

Doing the CELTA course at Oxford House Barcelona is one of the best decision I've made! I feel like the tutors and teachers were able to teach me a lot during a period of only one month. I had never taught classes before and now I feel confident, able and informed enough to teach a 90 minute class! After the course I found a job within a couple of weeks. It was certainly a wonderful experience that created a lot of opportunities for my future!

I have been an ESOL teacher for about eight years and have taught in four countries. I went into this program just for the certificate in order to teach in Spain and ended up learning new teaching techniques, new lesson plans, and new approaches to teaching grammar. The program is intense and I recommend that you dedicate your time and focus to completing all the assignments. The tutors were always there to help guide us, the students were wonderful, and I even made friends who also took the course with me. Overall, this program is excellent!

What inspired you to travel abroad?

When I first arrived in Barcelona I saw flyers around town advertising English language courses at Oxford TEFL that used humor which no other school was doing. It struck me as a school who wanted to do things differently. I decided to apply to be a general English teacher, and when I went for the interview knew straight away that I wanted to work there. It was a very small, professional school with a very relaxed family feel. In fact, the school was actually in a residential block of flats which felt like someone’s home. Since then we have moved several times to bigger premises but the family feel is still here.

What inspired you to travel abroad?

Like many who go into teaching English, it was the ‘International’ part of the equation that attracted me initially. I was looking for a way to live in other countries, allowing me to understand the culture better than travelling for a week’s holiday would ever do. It was the classic case of remembering a friend of a friend’s cousin who’d lived in the Canary Islands teaching English several years before that and wondering if that was something I could do too, not that I had any idea back then about teaching.

It was always my dream to live long-term in Europe, and to do that, of course, I needed a job (one can't go on being a student forever!). I wanted to really integrate myself into a new culture, and teaching English seemed like a good way to create long-term opportunities for myself.

What inspired you to travel abroad?

I was working as a Director of Teacher Training in a School in Barcelona. I didn’t like the way it was being run and two of my colleagues agreed with me. We thought we could do better. Not 100 percent pure idealism though. We also thought it would be better to be in control of our own fate/jobs so there was a practical reason too.

What inspired you to travel abroad?

I first got into teaching while I was still in college. I taught two or three groups of students at a language school in Monterrey (Mexico) to earn some money for myself. When I graduated from university and got my degree in Psychology, I wanted to save some money to be able to get a Masters before establishing myself as a practicing psychologist. I took up a full-time teaching job at an elementary school, where I taught both English and Science to third and fifth graders, and eventually fell in love with teaching as a profession. I taught there for four years and then considered moving to Spain. In spite of my teaching experience, I heard from employers in Barcelona that I would need to have an internationally recognized teaching certificate so that they could consider hiring me. I registered for the Trinity CertTESOL course and was fortunate enough to find a full-time job the month after I completed the course.

What inspired you to travel abroad?

I initially started out as a primary teacher. After finishing my PGCE I worked at two independent girls’ schools in Manchester for five years, mainly preparing pupils for grammar school entrance exams. I think this is where my love for exam classes stems from! Although I always enjoyed teaching the British primary curriculum, I had also been interested in TEFL for a while and eventually I decided to change my career path slightly and enrolled on a TESOL cert course. I really enjoyed the programme and loved the new classroom experience, just focusing on one subject and having more mature students. I could finally focus on what I loved best: teaching, instead of having to do a lot of extra paperwork, playground duties, after school clubs etc. After three years of EFL experience in the UK doing the diploma was the next logical step in my professional development.
