CELTA at Oxford house BCN

May 04, 2019by: Niamh Crowley - Ireland

From my initial interview (with the bubbly and enthusiastic Justin) to our "leaving party" and post-course job search, I have only good things to say about the Oxford House Barcelona staff. All administrative staff, tutors and teachers were extremely friendly and supportive, ready to give help and advice at the drop of a hat. The school itself is bright, spacious, well-equipped, well located and inviting. The timetable is intense but the sense of community at Oxford House helps a lot. During the course, we were teaching adult students ranging in age from early twenties to late sixties/seventies. The groups were enthusiastic and patient. We got great teaching experience and were given continuous feedback and constructive criticism from both peers and tutors throughout the course. I would definitely recommend CELTA at Oxford House BCN for anybody interested in doing the intensive course.

The CELTA course at Oxford TEFL in Barcelona was amazing. The program is well structured, very useful and interesting. The course is intensive but you get a lot of support from lovely tutors and other teachers. The careers service which the program offers is also really good. I would definitely recommend doing your CELTA course here. It is the perfect way to meet new people in a new city and to improve/develop your teaching skills. All the people at the school are very nice and inspiring and the atmosphere there is very supportive and positive.

The CELTA course was well structured, coherent and very practical. Beautiful school, perfectly located and well equipped. Tutors were professional and dedicated, ready to provide support and encouragement. I am happy to have chosen this school and would definitely recommend to anyone.

I have been an ESOL teacher for about eight years and have taught in four countries. I went into this program just for the certificate in order to teach in Spain and ended up learning new teaching techniques, new lesson plans, and new approaches to teaching grammar. The program is intense and I recommend that you dedicate your time and focus to completing all the assignments. The tutors were always there to help guide us, the students were wonderful, and I even made friends who also took the course with me. Overall, this program is excellent!

Fantastic English teaching course

I completed my CELTA course in December 2018 with Oxford House and I could not sing their praises high enough. Everything from the teachers and facilities to the material and structure was perfect. It is quite an intense course but there is a great sense of togetherness while going through it from both teachers and fellow students. With its central location Oxford House was excellently placed for all students to reach quite easily. I would highly recommend this course to anyone thinking of studying English teaching in Spain.

Worth every penny!

Having just graduated from University, I decided to do this course in order to gain a valuable qualification which would help me find teaching opportunities abroad. I had very little teaching experience before starting the course and felt a bit nervous at the thought of teaching a class in my first week, but now I am a confident, capable and assertive teacher. This course is 100% worth the price, and is a real investment. I should add that I came out of the course with a job, ready to start the following week in Barcelona!

Feeling prepared to teach in Barcelona!

The course is intense however all of the tutors and administrators at oxfordtefl are very supportive in the journey. Also, the school has a very wide network and tons of resources to use for teaching.

I didn’t plan to use my certificate right away, and took the course as a fall back plan for my ibevitable midlife crisis. I see teaching English as a way to travel without being a tourist and the course has made that a viable possibility. I feel well insulated for whatever the future holds!

A great insight into teaching

I decided to take a CELTA course at Oxford House Barcelona because it looked like a well-established institution with a very warm and bright atmosphere. I had three years of previous teaching experience, but I wanted to get the methodology down so that I could structure my classes in a way that would benefit my students. The course was exactly what I had been hoping for - lots of practical tips and tricks, techniques, and insight into areas that only come by with experience. Teaching practice with DETAILED feedback from inspiring and incisive tutors systematically developed our skills over the 4 weeks, and this is exactly what I wanted - I wanted a professional opinion on my teaching. The tutors supported us in lesson planning and were available all the time. The careers office makes finding a job so much easier and hopeful for everyone who struggles with CV, NIE and what not. A great synergy.

Studying for success!

I loved my course at Oxford House! The teachers were friendly, smart and helpful; the courses were informative and prepared me for my own teaching lessons; there were plenty of resources available; the school was in a great neighborhood with plenty of good places to eat, shop and walk around to. My only slight was with my roommates that I was paired with who had less tidy living habits than I did - but my host cleared it up once I brought it to her attention. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time in Barcelona and have just accepted a position, which we began interviewing for as soon as Corinne sent out our CVs! I would recommend studying in Barcelona and Oxford house in general to anyone that asked.

This was a wonderful experience and, as promised, I am confident I can start teaching right after the program ends. The course is intense and the schedule long on school days, but the knowledge gains makes it overall an exceptional experience. The school holds everyone to high standards in coursework and academic behaviors. The staff is professional and always ready to assistant when needed. I am so glad to be be able to participate in this program and learn from knowledgable and experienced staff. The job placement program is strong and support with resumes is available. Many of my classmates already have jobs in the area. The school is well run and has a a great reputation.

A good value for money

This course worths every penny I have paid for. I enjoy every day spent there. Firstly, the academy is well located, just around paseo de gracia, although the shopping street has lured me to spend much money on my way to the academy every morning...The center has a lovely garden and basically has everything we needed, although I think more stationeries can be fueled in the office, like glues and tapes. Secondly, the tutors are very friendly, patient and helpful. They are always available to offer avdice. Thirdly, teaching content is well designed. But it would be better if teaching young learners and business can be included in this CELTA course too. If we are asked to pay again for the extra courses, then I guess most people would just skip them. I felt sorry that the teaching young learners' session was cancelled because of insufficient students signed up.

If you're searching for a program that will help you to feel confident in the classroom then Oxford TEFL Barcelona is for you! I'm a former Peace Corps Volunteer and I learned more in this 4-week class than I did in my 10-week training program as a volunteer. I had no formal teaching experience going into this program but by the end I felt comfortable and prepared stepping into the classroom. The tutors provide you with a plethora of information and hands-on skills that directly correlate to tools you'll need in the classroom. I will say that if you're choosing this program hoping that it will be cake walk and a 4-week vacation then you're in for a surprise. The word "intensive" isn't in the description by accident but I promise you can do it if you're willing to put in the effort! The tutors are friendly, experienced, knowledgable, and want you to succeed. The staff is honestly amazing! Every week is challenging but nothing they ask of you will be ridiculous. During this 4-week program I felt emotions ranging from anxiety to pure euphoria. I have had a lot of great experiences in my life but this definitely close to one of my best decisions I've ever made :)

The time I spent in Barcelona doing CELTA course with Oxford Tefl is really unforgettable! The course brought my teaching to a new level, gave me fresh ideas for further professional development, set further challenges. In afddition, I had wonderful time in Barcelona and made new friends from all over the world. Now I start reaping the benefit of it as my career in EFL teaching is definitely taking a new turn.

Hard work but worth it!

This course is very intensive but you are given a full explanation of what is involved before you start both by doing the pre-course task and during the telephone interview. I found that the tutors were excellent and extremely supportive and the feedback that you got from the lessons taught really helped you to focus on improving your teaching practice. All the staff that I encountered were extremely professional and would try to help you find a solution to any problems that you faced. I had an extremely positive experience at Oxford House and would recommend the course to anyone who wants to do a Cambridge CELTA. However you must be prepared to give up your life for a month to cope with the workload! Thank you Oxford House for a fantastic CELTA course!

Course is good but the company is money hungry

June 18, 2018by: truthfulteacher - Spain

Had a good experience during the TEFL course; met great people and learned a lot. The tutors seem to be quite inflexible in how you teach during the lesson observations. You need to fit the style of each tutor (you have a different one every week), or else your feedback is horrible. I also got a lot of mixed feedback (too much circulation, too little circulation). I am a qualified secondary science teacher with formal university training and 2 years of experience teaching. A lot of the feedback and suggestions given to me went against a lot of the standard pedagogy practicies and theories that are practiced in schools in the Western society. In addition, as a CANADIAN citizen, I was eligible for the Working Holiday Visa, but Regina, the visa coordinator back then, advised me that this was not possible for this program. This was COMPLETELY wrong, so I ended up spending about 3500 euros that I didn't need to spend. I was also asked to write a review for Oxford TEFL on their webpage, which I agreed to, but they decided to cut the part about Canadians not needing a student visa to be able to work in Spain. Completely immoral; just trying to scam people out of thousands of euros by not telling them all available options and actually providing the wrong information in order to make money for the company. Also, the job seeking help that they offer is just an excel spreadsheet of all recent graduates that are sent out to a list of schools. That's it. Oh, but they do help you with CV writing. I would strongly strongly STRONGLY advise against doing the Student Visa program that allows you to work 20hrs/week. They make you attend every single class (even if you are a native Spanish speaker, they won't let you switch classes to another language, for example Catalan), they keep track of your in-class participation, and you need to write a 1000 word essay every month, which is graded. If you fail to meet any of their requirements, you risk being reported to the government by Kate, the coordinator of the Developing Teaching Course. I understand wanting to follow the requirements of the student visa, but they don't follow all the rules themselves. Oh by the way, even if you do this Student Visa thing, you will most likely be working illegally anyway. You need to get a Work Authorization from your place of work, but NO school/academy will give you this, including Oxford House itself!!!! Hahahaha... they hire teachers illegally and pay them under the table, but are covering their backs by making students do all this extra work for nothing!! Oh also, during the developing teacher classes, we normally just sit there while Billy asks us to discuss amongst ourselves, "What did you learn in Spanish class this week?" "what have you tried in your lessons that you thought went well?" or take 30 minutes explaining how to use Google Docs........ it's a COMPLETE waste of time! I'd rather an hour session of students sharing good practice (which is basically what it is, but a lot of time is wasted on really useless information). I don't know a single DTS student that is happy with it. They all move to TEFL Iberia, where its less than half the price of Oxford House, and you don't need to attend any classes. They just leave you alone and let you live and work!!!

Hello, thank you for your review. We would like to apologise about the misinformation about the working holiday visa. We have updated the visa service and our website to include this option for Canadians, Australians and New Zealanders which we were not aware of when you applied for your course in 2016.

Our Developing Teacher with Spanish course meets the requirements of the long-term student visa in order to apply for work authorization. We provide this at Oxford House for anyone we offer a contract to. If you are not working for us then we are unable to provide this work authorization.

It is a requirement of the Spanish consulate that on the long-term student visa you must study for 20 hours per week – any organization which is not enforcing this is breaking the law and may face closure or a heavy fine if found out. In addition to this, other course providers may offer courses for a visa application but they do not include Spanish classes, accreditation by Instituto Cervantes or a program which includes the required study time to legally apply or keep your visa.

Participants of any course as part of the long-term student visa are required to attend at least 80% of classes which provides some flexibility. As the name suggests, the Developing Teacher with Spanish course is for developing teaching skills and taking Spanish classes. It is not possible to offer this course with Catalan classes because we don’t provide Catalan classes in our school.

The fees mentioned in your review which were paid include the initial accredited TEFL certification and the 6 months of the Developing Teacher course (a total of 614 training hours).

Over the last two years, we have been through a full process of tutorials and feedback with all Developing Teacher with Spanish trainees and made continuous improvements to the workshop sessions and course in general to ensure they are more relevant to the trainees.

Regarding the careers service, this includes unlimited face to face and email support, including interview preparation, CV writing, and advice/ recommendations of schools to apply to. We also contact our database of schools for you and have a dedicated Facebook page for work which is updated extremely frequently with jobs in Spain and around the world. It is not a job placement service which we make as clear as possible on our website, communications and documentation provided to our applicants. We will endeavor to continue to find ways of making this as clear as possible.

Thank you again for your feedback, it is always useful for us to receive so that we can continue to improve our service. Best of luck with your teaching.
Trinity certTESOL at the Oxford TEFL in Barcelona

I researched other schools and am so happy I chose Oxford House to obtain my Trinity CertTESOL as they have the best reputation! After completing the course it is easy to understand why: the facilities, teaching resources and especially the teachers are the best I have ever come across. Everyone at Oxford House is so nice and always available to help in any way. The month-long intensive course was very challenging and indeed very intensive! However, the tutors were there the whole time to help in every way possible. The assignments were also explained very thoroughly and help was always there if needed. I was also very lucky to have such amazing classmates to share my experience and could not have made it through the course without them! Overall, this was one of the best educational experiences of my life and I am so grateful for everyone at Oxford House!

I've been to Barcelona, Spain to study the Trinity CertTESOL at the Oxford TEFL. I had a wonderful time there since the course was really perfect to me. I've learnt a lot of new things not only teaching knowledge but also inspirations, motivations and other things. I loved the time I was there with experienced, supportive, informative, helpful teachers, friendly classmates and modern falicities. The trinity CertTESOL course was challenged for me actually. And I could not have done it without help and motivations from the course director, my tutors and friends. Thank you!

Amazing TEFL program in Barcelona!

Such an amazing experience getting my CertTESOL Certificate at Oxford House Barcelona. The staff and teachers are all very helpful and experienced. The 4 week program is intense (as they say in the brochure) but with the help of my peers and the teachers we pulled through! One month out and I felt confident to interview with a company and I got a full time teaching job! Thanks for all the help Oxford House!

An intensive experience

This programme is certainly intensive are well-prepared for this. The pre-course activity is done online and was a very useful introduction to grammar and lesson-planning, but of course nothing is the same as standing in a class in front of real students- this is the heart of this course and the great advantage of a 4-week intensive. The course consists of input sessions on language, observation of experienced teachers and peers, and your own teaching practice. I found the venue, professionalism and skills of the tutors and course materials to be of the highest standard. This is a very supportive environment and an excellent start to a career in TEFL, with great careers support also. I would highly recommend coming to Oxford House Barcelona for a great TEFL training and all-round experience!

It was always my dream to live long-term in Europe, and to do that, of course, I needed a job (one can't go on being a student forever!). I wanted to really integrate myself into a new culture, and teaching English seemed like a good way to create long-term opportunities for myself.

What inspired you to travel abroad?

I initially started out as a primary teacher. After finishing my PGCE I worked at two independent girls’ schools in Manchester for five years, mainly preparing pupils for grammar school entrance exams. I think this is where my love for exam classes stems from! Although I always enjoyed teaching the British primary curriculum, I had also been interested in TEFL for a while and eventually I decided to change my career path slightly and enrolled on a TESOL cert course. I really enjoyed the programme and loved the new classroom experience, just focusing on one subject and having more mature students. I could finally focus on what I loved best: teaching, instead of having to do a lot of extra paperwork, playground duties, after school clubs etc. After three years of EFL experience in the UK doing the diploma was the next logical step in my professional development.
