We are a nonprofit organization focused on education in Central America. In Guatemala, we are based in Santiago Atitlan, a small town with approximately 45,000 people. For 90 percent of the population, Tz'utujil is their mother tongue, one of the 24 indigenous languages spoken in Guatemala. It is a beautiful town with a lot of history and with an important indigenous culture that makes it especially unique and interesting. In Santiago Atitlan, we are focused on teaching English in primary schools. English class is part of the national primary school curriculum, but very few primary education teachers have the skills to teach the language to their students. At this moment, we are collaborating with four primary schools, where our volunteers teach English to 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th graders. With these lessons, we are preparing them for their English classes in secondary schools. They can also use this knowledge for their future professional life, as the tourism sector is growing very quickly in Central America.
