Hands-On Global Health Volunteering in Uganda
Program Overview
Omni Med is a nonprofit public health organization based in Mukono District, Uganda, focused on strengthening community health through sustainable, locally led programs. Our Global Health Volunteer Program offers hands-on, community-based experiences for students and early-career professionals interested in public health and global health.
Volunteers work alongside Uganda’s Village Health Teams (VHTs) to support health education, malaria prevention, water and sanitation initiatives, school health programs, and basic data collection. Activities may include community outreach, home visits, hygiene education, water source mapping, and assisting with VHT trainings.
This is a non-clinical program centered on public health, community engagement, and experiential learning. Placements are available year-round with flexible start dates and both short- and long-term immersion options.
Volunteers receive on-site orientation, housing, local supervision, and ongoing support. This program is ideal for undergraduate students, pre-med and nursing students, MPH candidates, and individuals seeking ethical, community-centered global health experience in rural Uganda.

What type of work do volunteers do?
Volunteers collaborate with local VHTs on health trainings, data collection, and outreach programs covering topics such as malaria prevention, maternal health, hypertension, and nutrition. Volunteers also have option to create their own trainings based on their interests.
How long is the typical volunteer placement?
Placements range from short-term immersion which is 1-2 weeks to long-term immersion of 1-2 month, depending on the project and volunteer’s background.
Local Travel and Time Off
We certainly understand that people who volunteer with us may also have an interest in seeing the surrounding areas. Many of our visitors have gone on safari or even climbed Mt Kilimanjaro following their work with us. However, we stress up front that our mission is to improve the health of the populations we serve. While staying with us in the Omni Med Compound, that means that you are working. Where do volunteers stay?
Volunteers stay in shared guesthouses on the Omni Med compound. Each room is secured with locks, and valuables can be stored in safeboxes. the compound has 24-hour security staff, gated walls, and reliable local oversight, providing a safe and comfortable environment. New upgrades also include 24hr solar power electricity and hot water.
How do volunteers get around?
Local transportation is typically by taxi (shared van) or Omni Med vehicles for work-related travel. Staff help coordinate safe and reliable transport for field visits, and volunteers receive guidance on travel safety during orientation. Omni Med staff will pick you up at Entebbe International Airport. Some volunteers arriving at night choose to stay in a hotel in Entebbe or Kampala, and then come to the Omni Med compound in the morning.
