Program Overview

Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory in the Caribbean, is shaped by a rich blend of Indigenous, Spanish, African, and North American influences. Its unique political history and cultural identity make it an exceptional destination for students interested in Caribbean Studies, Afro-Latinx Studies, Diaspora Studies, Postcolonial Studies, and Spanish language and culture. Students enroll directly in a wide range of academic disciplines at one of Puerto Rico’s leading universities, gaining firsthand experience in the island’s intellectual, cultural, and social life. In addition to coursework, participants may pursue internships and other experiential learning opportunities that connect their academic interests with the local community. Students may study at the University of Puerto Rico's Mayagüez campus, the University of Puerto Rico's Río Piedras campus, or the Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. These opportunities allow students to combine rigorous academics with immersive, place-based learning while exploring the complex histories, cultures, and contemporary issues that shape Puerto Rico and the broader Caribbean region.

Wepa! Puerto Rico: donde la vibra e’ otra cosa.

Puerto Rico both stimulated my intellectual curiosity and cultural appreciation yet graced my days with a sun-kissed Caribbean glow, face full of sand, and belly full of “fritura.” The layered cultural elements of the island are scattered, evident in an intoxicating “recorrido” through the colonial remnants of San Juan and the contemporary Latinx flare with hints of American cultivation. As a frequent visitor thanks to my Boricua pedigree, I can attest to Puerto Rico being the domestic destination with an abroad feel, friendly locals, evergreen mountains, turquoise beaches, and vibrant night life. I can give no higher recommendation — hop on a flight to “la isla del encanto” now!!
