Sea Turtle Conservation Volunteering in Nicaragua
by MEMANTA
Program Overview
Become a part of our conservation effort on a remote beach in Nicaragua, where sea turtle eggs have been harvested ever since. Local families rely on the income they generate by selling eggs on the market. That's why we pay for most of the nests we protect in our hatchery.
Our ecologically built infrastructure is located within a virgin beachfront forest adjacent to the Pacific Ocean. We offer a dormitory-style cabin (accommodating a maximum of 4 people) with a shared toilet and shower, as well as a cozy community space with a well-equipped kitchen. Volunteers cook their own breakfast and lunch and enjoy a traditional dinner.
Join us in Nicaragua, helping physically (with the workload) and financially. The more people come and stay, the more we can protect as a community. Expect to help with daily chores such as hatchery management, nest relocation, maintenance, gardening, and more. It is important for us to give you enough free time to explore and enjoy the natural setting. We also have a weekly activity schedule with workshops, crafts, courses, and fun trips (optional but included in the price).
This program is also open to students seeking internship opportunities.

When is the best time to volunteer?
Our sea turtle program runs from August until January. Volunteering is open from the 1st of July to the 31st of January, with varying activities involved. If you want to maximize your chances of seeing turtles, you should come during the high season in September, October, or November. In December, however, we still release a lot of hatchlings, and the weather is terrific!
What kind of work will I be doing?
During the peak turtle season, we focus on patrols and hatchery shifts at night and tasks around the property, the hatchery, or the beach in the afternoon. When the turtle activity is low, we focus on gardening, forest management, maintenance, building, beach clean-ups, and community programs.
What kind of activities are included?
The program includes several fun and educational activities, including workshops and presentations, basic Spanish lessons, boat rides, horseback trips, nature walks, bodyboarding, and team rallies.
