Best Time of my Life!
May 29, 2025by: Paul Muhr - AustriaI had the opportunity to be in Japan, Fukuoka and learn Japanese Language and culture at Meiji Academy. The staff and teachers were so nice, friendly and helpful. It was perfect to see and feel new culture. I can recommend it to everybody who likes Japan!

Best overal Japanese online lessons
July 20, 2024by: Kimaya Patel - IndiaMeiji's online lessons were simply the best solution for me to prepare myself before applying for the student visa course. The teachers are very experienced, very affordable lesson prices, flexible scheduling and unbeatable customer service. I ended up doing the whole 150 hours for my Japanese certificate with them. Can't recommend enough.
Got my 150 hours Japanese language teaching certificate
April 07, 2024by: Blu Samurai - United StatesAs a requirement to study at a Japanese Language School in Japan on the Student Visa Japan puts a few difficulties in terms of what you need to get if you haven't graduated from university. In my case I finished high school last year and wanted to apply with Meiji Academy in Hokkaido so I made sure to get all docs ready. The Japanese governements requirement they want me to get is either JLPT N5 or 150 hours. For the the second option was quicker so I made sure to get my schedule sorted out and Meiji organized all for me to be ready in time that I can apply for my student visa. Thanks again for the prompt support all way through.
All the best aspects of a language school
August 31, 2022by: Jocelyn Porter - CanadaReally good. Some teachers can speak English while some can’t, I think it’s a good mix as some of my lessons forced me to use only Japanese. I really struggle with learning languages, but it seems that my teachers understood this as they made things so easy for me. I didn’t want to focus on the JLPT because I can’t commit enough time to it, so at my request our lessons were purely focused on every-day Japanese. I was glad to find that the lessons were of relatively high quality despite being online, for this reason in particular they are very convenient.
Lessons at a good time
August 17, 2022by: Leo Bianchi - ItalyMeiji have the best online lessons! I can do them any time from my bedroom , and the quality is really good! I am starting at before even n5, and now after some months I am working on the n4 JLPT. They are really fun too. Thank you to Meiji Academy!
Got my feet wet
August 15, 2022by: Joanna Glass - AustraliaLearning Japanese is a big commitment, so I was wary of jumping straight into a full-blown language school before actually having experienced any form of teaching. These online lessons were a great option for me, not only were they convenient but I was able to take one step at a time and assess if learning this language was right for me. In the end I found great enjoyment in these lessons, and have concluded that learning Japanese is absolutely the right thing for me.
Very good language school
August 10, 2022by: Carl Haas - GermanyTo supplement my university studies of Japanese, I did some online lessons with Meiji Academy during my summer break. The lessons were really useful and gave me a great opportunity to practice. The teachers are very professional and they gave me some challenging content to work with, but at the same time they were always helpful when I was having some difficulty. I will definitely be doing some more lessons the next time I have a break from university.
Revelation!
August 09, 2022by: Stephen Fuller - United KingdomThe pandemic brought a lot of negativity to life, but for me it did bring some good as I finally learned about the power of doing things virtually. I decided to give virtual Japanese lessons a shot, as I had put off my dream of learning Japanese for way too long and this option was just too convenient to say no. The lessons were really fun and engaging, and even when I struggled I felt extremely relaxed given that I was in my own home. I’d definitely recommend these for those who have tight schedules but a real desire to learn a language!
Great alternative to being in Japan
August 03, 2022by: Francis Armstrong - New ZealandCouldn't make it out to Japan for various reasons and I couldn't find reliable Japanese teachers anywhere in my local area, so when I saw that I could attend classes virtually I jumped at the chance. I was able to receive proper teaching at times that suited me, so I was really happy in the end. To me it felt as if the level of quality matched that of actually being there, it’s definitely a much more convenient and cost effective option to consider.
Awesome lessons without the jet-lag!
July 25, 2022by: Harry Short - United KingdomMeiji’s lessons are top-tier! It felt like having my very own private teacher in the comfort of my living room, with as much as lifting a finger I could converse with a native Japanese from the other side of the world. The lessons were well-structured and the teacher was slightly adapt them to help me reach my own personal goals with the language. Having the flexibility to choose a time that works with my schedule was super convenient too, it really made the whole process of learning painless. All in all I learnt a lot and didn't have to give much in return! Cheers Meiji
Great value for money
June 28, 2022by: Leyla Francis - United StatesConsidering how much private tutoring costs these days, I think that these online lessons are great value for money. I had my own teacher who was native Japanese, and genuinely an exceptional teacher. Her enthusiasm for teaching really gave me motivation to push through, even when I thought things were too difficult. Having that option to choose a time that works for me was also a lifesaver, when I decided to learn Japanese I thought my university schedule would make things difficult but not with these. I would fully recommend studying online with Meiji Academy!
Online lessons, thank you
June 20, 2022by: Alessio Gallo - ItalyMeiji was very helpful to me when I had the online lesson with them. I am finished now with the probably n4 level, and I feel motivate to learn even much more! Plus the teachers is all really nice and they are helping even when my Japanese was bad. Very good, so I recommend. Grazie mille!
Future of language learning
June 14, 2022by: Madison Thomas - AustraliaI’ve learnt languages on-and-off for the past few years, but never saw the results I had hoped to see due to a lack of proper immersion. To be frank, I wish I’d known about online lessons a long time ago! I live in small-town Australia so the chance of speaking with native Japanese is 0 to none, so speaking online was the perfect solution for me. It was actually the first time I had spoken to a native Japanese and it felt very refreshing, even though there were some gaps in my ability to communicate, every lesson motivated me and pushed me to learn more. Thanks to all of Meiji and their kind, helpful staff! I recommend Meiji for anybody that’s serious about learning Japanese.
Preparation for moving to Japan
June 09, 2022by: Vanessa Keys - United KingdomFinally the Japanese borders are beginning to open up, so I’ve decided to move there for a year with a working holiday visa. Before I go I figured it would be a good idea to get a basic grip on the language, to make my time there slightly easier. This was the perfect option for me, they understood exactly what I needed and taught me all the most important phrases. We focused on things you would use in every day life, like phrases used in the supermarket, at train stations, airports, etc. I now feel prepared for my journey in Japan, and will be moving there next week. Thank you very much for giving me more confidence!
Good introduction to the Japanese language
June 09, 2022by: Isaac Dumont - BelgiumI started this online lessons after I had some holidays from university. I am a total beginner and this gave me a really good introduction to the basics. It was not just useful but also fun, the teacher was really nice and we talked about many things all the time. I hope that after university when I have more time I will learn some more.
A little goes a long way
June 06, 2022by: Ruby Moore - United StatesLifesaver! My Japanese studies were suffering due to my crazy work schedule, and this was the perfect solution. I booked lesson slots that fit into my free time, so I was able to get plenty of practice. For anybody struggling to learn Japanese, speaking practice is definitely the way forward. Meiji were always super organised, they were ready for the lessons on time, they always accommodated for my busy schedule, and the quality of the lessons were great. I’ll be moving to Japan soon so will no longer need lessons, but I would definitely continue with these if I could!
Helped me to learn Japanese
June 01, 2022by: Denis Cartier - FranceThe online lessons by Meiji academy were definitely great. I study online with them for maybe 3 months and it was helpful in making my Japanese improved! I started with probably the n5 level and think I am now the n4. The teachers were very nice to me and made it very easy to be motivated. After this lessons I hope to go to Japan when the borders are opened and I will be able to use the Japanesee I have learned :) Thank you
Great overall
May 30, 2022by: Amanda Fournier - CanadaI finished my lessons last week and can say that I made a great choice in choosing Meiji academy to learn Japanese. This is the 2nd company I’ve studied with, and without mentioning any names I will say that in comparison Meiji are much more professional and I learnt a lot more with them. I was taught by some very patient and encouraging native Japanese who always kept me motivated to keep progressing. The only issue I had was occasionally with connection. This was an issue from my side, but just as a word of warning if you want to study online make sure your connection is good enough so you don't waste anybody's time.
Meiji academy 2 months online lessons
May 30, 2022by: Tobias Weber - GermanyI did 2 months online lessons with Meiji and I would like to say it was super!! I studied at home before so I was N5 level, then with Meiji and some hard studying I am now almost ready for n4. My English is sometimes not so great so it was actually a good thing because it meant I had to speak in Japanese at all times. Thank you Meiji for making it so easy to me, I recommend to everybody to choose it!!
The long-awaited end to my procrastination
May 26, 2022by: Sarah Hutchinson - United KingdomI had been “studying” (making half-hearted attempts at grammar and watching anime) for about 6 months and for obvious reasons wasn’t seeing the results I’d hoped for. You know it’s bad when you’re still struggling with hiragana after 6 months… I basically realised I had been procrastinating all this time and had wasted so much valuable study opportunity. After much thinking, I finally decided to stop messing around and get serious with learning. The first step in this was doing online lessons with Meiji. Can I just say, that was probably the best decision I could have ever made for so many reasons. The teachers are excellent in every way. They’re understanding, supportive, and so good at teaching! I did lessons for only a month, and pretty much learnt double what I did by myself in 6 months. Not only that, but the lessons gave me so much inspiration and energy to learn more, I'm fully motivated now and am consistently studying everyday. I think I’ll be ready for JLPT n5 very very soon :) Meiji you’ve done more for me than you will ever know. Thank you thank you thank you!

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to reach JLPT N(5 - 1) through online lessons?
This depends largely on your current Japanese skill level and the amount of time and effort you’re willing to put in towards mastering each level. However, even if you don’t yet know hiragana and katakana, with the right amount of effort, we believe you can be ready to pass the N4 level within half a year.
How does Meiji Academy measure student progress?
For beginner and intermediate students, we focus on correcting your mistakes in real time so you can instantly understand difficult concepts and adapt accordingly. We believe this approach is much more effective than grading and reviewing written exams at these skill levels. Of course, if your goal is to pass the JLPT, we offer an in-depth review of practice exams.
Do I have to use Zoom?
Zoom is our preferred platform for Online Lessons, as we take full advantage of the tools and features it has to offer.
What language will be used during class?
The main language of teaching is Japanese, yet our teachers understand English. Meiji Academy teachers are very experienced using communicative methods of language teaching, and they are experts at using different means, such as role-plays and mimics, to ensure that even complete beginners are able to learn Japanese smoothly.
Who can take Private Online Lessons?
Anyone! Our Private Online Lessons are suitable for advanced students, as well as for beginners and people who have never studied Japanese before.
