Of course, there were some challenging moments, but Sean was always there to support me and help me improve. I also met wonderful people who share the same passion for teaching, and I made great friends along the way. As a non-native English speaker, I always felt supported and encouraged. Maximo Nivel is an amazing place to earn your TEFL certification, regardless of whether English is your first language. They truly help you build the confidence and skills you need to become a successful English teacher. My time at Maximo Nivel was incredible. During my time at the institute I learned many new life skills and teaching skills. What was so great about the teaching skills that we learned in the classroom is that we spent a sufficient amount of time applying those skills in real settings. Overall, I feel I have been prepared to actually teach a class. I think that this course did a good job of introducing the idea of teaching without being too frightening. This may be the first time that I am taking a class and I actually am applying what I have learned. This is the most applied course I have ever taken. Doing observations, practical practice and learning techniques that were drilled again and again was helpful.

I had an absolutely fantastic time at Maximo Nivel this past November. It went by extremely fast, as everything was well organized with a clear end point to help each participant receive the certification at the end. For someone like me who loves languages and has lots of experience with them, the TEFL course was definitely not as intensive and strenuous as I expected, though I still felt well challenged. Our trainer Sean was entertaining, thoughtful, and kept us on our toes throughout the course, and his encouragement and reassurance to be available giving extra help was greatly appreciated. He and the whole Maximo team looked out well for me during the duration of the program, and I now feel well prepared to teach both online and in person. Not only that, there were amazing opportunities to network and make friends, including via the TEFL program itself, via free cooking classes, free tours, and salsa classes included at the institute. Overall, it was an incredible experience that I wish had no end. The city of Cusco also has an astounding amount of things to do always (I stayed in the city instead of going on outside tours for pretty much my whole month during the program, and was never bored). This course surpassed my expectations. I feel much more confident and prepared than I thought possible. I was also worried about the workload but it is definitely manageable and Sean (the GOAT TEFL instructor) wants you to succeed. The four weeks fly by and it is so much fun. Your first taste at teaching is the second day of the course and the whole last week you take over teaching an English class at the institute. You are baby-stepped into all of this and it really helps build confidence and practice with the techniques. Máximo in general is a great organization. They are organized and know what they are doing. It is super easy to meet both Peruvians and international students and everyone is so friendly. I 100% recommend and wish I were staying for longer.

A lot of universities could take a lesson or two from how everything is arranged at Maximo Nivel. I took the Spanish course in Guatemala five years ago, and I chose Maximo Nivel this time to have a different adventure because I knew that everything would be well arranged and that the highest quality would be guaranteed. I was on the proverbial fence about getting recertified in TEFL, as I had previously received my TEFL cert 16 years ago from the University of Arizona in Tucson. There seemed to be a lot of job opportunity in the area so part of me was thinking, "Why spend money unnecessarily when I can just start working right away?" Having said that, I am SO GLAD I signed up for the TEFL course with Máximo Nivel (Cusco) which I just completed this past Friday. Years ago, I got by teaching ESL based on the fact that I was a native speaker and that I had a fairly fun personality which my students generally responded well to. However, though most days I was passionate and gave my all, some days I was not good and did a disservice to the students I was teaching. Afterall, they were paying hard-earned money to learn English, not to be entertained. Máximo Nivel´s philosophy of teaching prioritizes STT (Student Talk Time) and in this course you learn not TO TEACH English, per se, but rather how to elicit and pull English language from the students! You learn how to constantly check in with your students to ensure they are understanding the activity in the classroom (CCQing), and you learn how to correct errors in a very direct and effective manner. Sean is the apotheosis of this teaching philosophy. He is in fact from day one modeling these techniques the whole time he´s teaching TEFL. Spoiler alert: about a week into the course, you realize that he has been teaching you in the same manner as he would his ESL students, utilizing all the same techniques. He has in fact elicited and pulled all of the information directly from the students and you discover that we've been doing most of the talking and that we're having a blast while doing so. It is such an engaging and empowering method of teaching; you remember the information easier because you are the one, in fact, producing the information. Brilliant! He basically is modeling and teaching you how to metaphorically do Aikido on your students! Using THEIR energy/activity/voice toward the ultimate goal of "doing" English. I don't want to give the illusion that this was an easy course, not at all. Especially for an old dog such as myself (50s now...yikes!) who struggles learning "new tricks" and whose personality is very well established. Speaking for myself, I had to destroy my ego and slowly build it back up again throughout the four weeks of instruction and there were many bumps along the way in learning how to consciously utilize these techniques. My younger cohort, all very talented and intelligent young women, were able to adjust more quickly. In the end I was able to do well enough to pass the course and when I struggled Sean was RIGHT THERE to support me. He was very available to his students; you got the feeling, and he in fact told us, he wouldn't allow us to fail. The last thing I'll say is that you immediately get to practice the techniques you are learning on ambitious young Peruvian students who take advantage of the free opportunity to participate in mini lessons which you, the TEFL student, are leading them through. This opportunity occurs weekly up until the final week where (M-F) all you are doing is preparing for and teaching a full class of students who are paying the institute money to be taught by you via all the techniques Sean has instilled in you. I thought my previous experience at U of A was great, but really there is no comparison to the hands-on, participatory experience offered my Máximo Nivel.

My time as a TEFL student was very enjoyable at Maximo. In general, having a lot of coursework is never fun, but our TEFL trainer made the course a lot of fun and I really got to bond with the people in my class. I really enjoyed getting to teach English students every week, especially during the final practical teaching week. For many years I’ve planned on getting my TEFL certificate and teaching English in countries across the world. I always saw it as something that would finally be my ticket for traveling to every far-off place I’ve ever dreamed of. Sean Barter is an excellent instructor who models in the TEFL course the characteristics he strives to develop in the teachers he is training. The observations and observation critique structures, multiple mini-lessons, feedback, self-reflection assignments and Practical Teaching Week all supported the development of the students in the class, as well as the lessons themselves. Although we spent long hours in class, we were always actively engaged with the material, the teacher, and the others in the class. Sean at Maximo is one of the best teachers I have ever had! Every lesson was fun and interesting, and we laughed along the whole time. I had such a fun and educational month at Maximo Nivel in Cusco, Peru. We laughed everyday, the students are so kind, sweet, and willing to learn, and I was able to have a full week of Practice Teaching experience. In class, we studied grammar, teaching theory, and played a lot of games. The office staff are so friendly and willing to help with anything, and Cusco is amazing city to be in. The TEFL program at Maximo Nivel Peru was excellent. Our instructor, Sean, was super knowledgeable and an amazing teacher. He taught us TEFL using the same ESL techniques we used with our own students. I personally loved his language lesson in Afrikaans. It really showed us what needs to happen while teaching a foreign language. Overall the course was very well taught, professional, and was completed with an epic graduation. I highly recommend this to anyone searching for a TEFL course.

Maximo’s TEFL course was thorough, engaging, and practice-driven. In one month we were able to cover the techniques of teaching AND have ample time to practice those techniques with real ESL students. The instructor was extremely knowledgeable, had excellent advice, and was always available for guidance. One of the best courses I’ve ever taken.

Maximo's TEFL course was a rigorous one month journey but the TEFL instructor and staff do everything in their power to ensure you have a blast inside class and outside of class. Sean the TEFL instructor makes every day go by fast and is an expert at his trade. The various admin will encourage you take part in excursions through a partnered travel agency or to sign up for their various free programs at the school. I highly encourage anyone to check any and all of these opportunities, I was never disappointed. This is an excellent course and they will make sure that you are set up with a job as soon as you'd like.

From the beginning the staff was accommodating and friendly. The TEFL course was as intense as expected but more. There was always support day or night. Sean made himself available for any and all concerns during or outside office hours. He always made the students realize their own potential and recognized any strengths or weaknesses that were praised or addressed. Sean is an asset to Maximo Nivel and should be recognized as such.

Maximo Nivel´s TEFL course really prepared me for my new career as an EFL teacher. I learned so much in such a busy month of work! I was able to practice and hone my teaching skills with real, EFL students in a classroom and was provided great feedback after each lesson I taught. This program exceeded my expectations. The TEFL course is intensive but very well-designed. I learned so much in just four weeks. The instructor was passionate, patient, encouraging, and knew exactly how to get us ready to teach. The combination of excellent instruction in teaching techniques and lesson planning, observations of real English classes being taught by certified teachers, and practice lessons gave me the confidence and preparation necessary to teach an actual English class by the fourth week of the course. My Tefl Certification program in Perú was amazing! The materialsame, the hours, and most of all the instructor were wonderful. Everything was spectacular, I recommend it 1000x over. Four intensive weeks of : mini lessons, grammar , vocabulary, 1 Week of teaching actual students, lots of lesson planning, and very helpful evaluation.

My experience at Maximo Nivel exceeded all my expectations. The coordinators were organized, professional, and everyone was there to help with any questions I had. The program itself was intense, but the curriculum was interesting, and the staff made sure to make it fun and exciting. I did not know what to expect when I signed up to get my TEFL certification, but the material we went over was helpful of the realities of being an English teacher and how to properly teach a foreign language to future students. I decided to take the TEFL course in Cusco, Peru at 49 years old. I was just ready for a change. When I first read about the TEFL online, I was instantly interested. I did my research to find out everything I could about the program at Maximo Nivel. Everything I could find was positive. Still with the cost being a pretty big investment, I took some time to really consider before signing up. I can honestly say, I have no regrets. The program was excellent. Everyone at Maximo Nivel was very friendly and helpful. My instructor, Sean, provided us with a quality education and support to be successful. It's true that the work load is intense, but my experience in the program was very enjoyable.

Maximo Nivel´s TEFL program was, simply put, amazing. It was informative, challenging, and extremely fun. All my expectations were met in and out of the classroom. The TEFL trainer here, Sean, was highly adept at connecting with a wide variety of people and able to make everyone´s voices heard during class. I felt like I received plenty of individual attention while also being immersed in a school community at Maximo Nivel. Additionally, the International Department supported me extremely well and were highly informed and helpful. Ellen was particularly awesome. She seems to know everything about Cusco and was more than willing to help me sort out issues experienced with ATMs, and really any other snag I hit- Ellen knew exactly how to fix it! Maximo Nivel is a good institute run by good people. They want to help you feel comfortable and successful and they´re good at it too!

When I signed up for the TEFL course, my main focus was just to do something that was out of my country and out of my comfort zone. I thought the real challenge was going to come from living in a new country and a new culture, but I underestimated the TEFL course challenge. Even though the course was a challenge, Sean (TEFL Instructor), Yobi (TEFL Instructor Assistant), and the Maximo Nivel team made the entire experience fun and a memory I will never forget. The best part about taking the TEFL course with Maximo Nivelis that anybody can really do it. The TEFL participants do not need to know Spanish, they do not need a college degree, and they do not need any prior teaching experience.

I completed the TEFL course in Cusco, Peru. I only have good things to say about the facility and the instructors. Sean was the lead instructor and Yobi was his assistant. Are class was rather large and I never felt like that affected the quality. Sean and Yobi were terrific. They were great teachers and handled the class masterfully. Any questions or doubts I had was quickly handled. The whole experience was wonderful. The classroom has everything you would ever need and all of the employees of Maximo were great. I was extremely impressed and would happily recommend this program to any of my friends.

The staff here is great; the really go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable in Cusco. I had some issues with the water heater in my apartment and told the Maximo staff and within the day it was resolved. They will work with your landlord or host family to make sure you are never lost in translation which is extremely helpful. I speak some Spanish but am easily overwhelmed by technical details, and so their help was much appreciated. The course itself is not very difficult, just requires that you put in the effort to keep up with the reading and a few papers. Even though you might be a native speaker you will definitely realize there are a lot of aspects to grammar that need a bit of study to wrap your head around (looking at you, conditionals). I never felt lost in the class because my teacher (Sean Barter) was absolutely fantastic and very engaging. Definitely one of the best teachers I've ever had and if the other teachers are of the same caliber I wholeheartedly recommend the program. My own class was great. Sean worked to make sure we as a class were cohesive while providing plenty of individual assessment and was available pretty much all the time. You should sign up! There's a lot more they offer than just the TEFL certification so there will be a lot to keep you occupied. It was a well spent month. Last thing, the practical teaching week seems like it's the most brutal thing in existence for the time you are there but it's incredibly helpful and really helps you understand if teaching is something you can succeed in or not. It was the hardest part of the course for me but the most rewarding. I was sad to leave my class on the last day while the first couple days I was dreading doing it. Felt like I learned a lot in a week. Definitely a lot in the whole month's course. I'm glad I completed this course. Year Completed 2017

Both the international team and the tutoring team were friendly, supportive and encouraging. There was always someone to ask questions of and to receive support if it was required. Classes were informative and fun and the small group size allowed more individual learning and an opportunity to bond as a group. I found my training group supportive and great to learn with.

What a brilliant experience it was to study TEFL with Maximo Nivel in Cusco, Peru. Had a really great experience with Maximo Nivel. Its such a big choice deciding on a TEFL programme and theres so many out there but I would happily recommend this one to anyone! The TEFL trainer Claudia was awesome and the ongoing support is great. Good facilities and a great location in Cusco :)

This TEFL program exceeded my expectations! Not only was this program really professionally run, but it was also so much fun! I feel totally prepared after completing this course to teach English anywhere in the world. I'm so grateful for this experience!

I absolutely loved my TEFL class and it was in huge part to the instructor, Claudia. She made the class so much fun, I was actually sad when class was over each day! She is also extremely knowledgeable about teaching english, always available to help in and out of class hours, and really empowered me to want to learn the techniques and become an awesome teacher myself! I was originally not entirely sure about taking the course and quite nervous before practical teaching, but I walked away absolutely loving it. I took the hybrid course, and while it was a good choice for me because I was already living in Cusco and my mom was visiting for a week, I would have preferred to take the full on-site course. The assignments and reading made so much more sense once in class. Maximo feels like a second home now, the TEFL room is amazing and has everything you need to hole up in and prepare for all of the practical teaching! I would highly recommend this course!

I took the TEFL course with Maximo Nivel in Cusco, Peru this past September and it was a really great experience. I had been wanting to take a TEFL certification course for awhile and although they are all semi-expensive I think it will definitely pay off in the end. The TEFL instructor there, Claudia, is super energetic and fun and makes the whole class enjoyable. Six hours of class sounds like it would be extremely dry but with her the time flew by and was really informative. The class is set up for you to succeed. There are so many people at Maximo Nivel who are willing to help out in whatever way they can which is great. After relearning English grammar and English teaching techniques they allow ample time to get in-class teaching experience. For me this was the most intimidating part but also the most rewarding. Being able to plan your own lessons and see how they work in an actual class is fantastic to see what works and what might need to be improved. Claudia and another teacher at the school were there to speak with us after class and give suggestions which was helpful as well. The school also offered teaching jobs to many of the TEFL participants after the course. My only criticism of the program is that it ends pretty abruptly. After the practical teaching week one needs to figure out their housing situation and potentially their job plans and it was really chaotic but that doesn't necessarily fall on Maximo Nivel's shoulders... that is more of a life lesson. All-in-all I would highly recommend this program as a way to meet some great people, get TEFL certified, and to experience a beautiful city in Cusco.

When I first found out about the TEFL program at Maximo Nivel, I thought it would be a big review of grammar and just little practical teaching. Then, I realized that it really is a big review on grammar plus many hours of practical teaching. I can say that my expectations were fulfilled. The idea to teach in front of actual learners amazed me and kind of terrified me at the beginning. When PTW started I thought I wasn’t ready but then when I was in front of the class I felt more than ready to start teaching. When I first took a seat, I really expected a really quiet class. I wasn’t right because it turned out to be a really funny and enjoyable class, not just because my classmates, Claudia the TEFL trainer was really funny. She really knows how to use all the techniques that we must dominate. This experience changed the way I look at education in general because I thought lesson planning wasn’t that important and teachers should be more focused on following the curriculum, now I realized that lesson planning is very important too. Having a good lesson plan allowed me to create good rapport and good CCQs to do on the learners.

I highly recommend, if you want to teach English in Cusco, getting ESL certified through Maximo Nivel. In Cusco and Lima, most language schools require teachers to have to have a TEFL certification to teach. Maximo Nivel was wonderful for many reasons. For one, I made lasting friendships in the month-long course with fellow classmates, as well as faculty and staff members at Maximo. Also, Maximo Nivel allows TEFL students to gain practical experience teaching native Spanish speakers throughout the course. Following the TEFL course, I quickly found work teaching English in Cusco and many language schools who interviewed me were impressed with the Maximo TEFL certification. However, the TEFL certification is also internationally recognized! Again, I HIGHLY recommend taking the Maximo Nivel TEFL course in Cusco.

One month after arriving in Cusco, Peru, I can honestly say that quitting my job to enroll in the TEFL certification course at Maximo Nivel was the best decision I have ever made! The TEFL instructor (Claudia) is so amazing, helpful, and incredibly accommodating. The course is intense, but anybody with experience taking university level course can definitely handle it. The course also allows an amazing amount of practical teaching experience which I personally thought was the best part of the course. I completed my TEFL course in July 2016 and loved every minute of it. I felt very supported in general from the entire staff at Maximo Nivel as there was always someone there to answer my concerns. The feedback and the practical experience we received was unparalleled, certainly more than I expected for a short 1 month course. The TEFL course was phenomenal in Cusco Peru. Claudia was an amazing instructor that taught, how she expected us to teach. This made it effortless to learn how to be a great TEFL teacher, seeing an example of it every day! Although very rigorous and intense, the coursework is relevant and pushes you to really understand the content. I loved the amount of practical teaching and incredible feedback.

I did not know what to expect from a TEFL program except what I read in different articles. Coming from a finance and management/administration background I thought this would be easy-I have handled top executives and interactions with politicians-how hard can this be?. It was night and day but the staff at Maximo especially the TEFL trainer/ facilitator Claudia made it an amazing experience. In June 2016 I completed my TEFL certification with Maximo Nivel - Cusco. I can't say enough about the experience, the TEFl training, and the entire Maximo staff. The TEFL training itself was intensive, structured, but lots of fun along the way. If you are serious about being an ESL teacher, this program will most definitely prepare you as well as help you in finding that dream teaching job. The school is centrally located in Cusco, so even with all your coursework, getting to know the city is quite easy in your month stay.

Maximo Nivel was a great experience. I wanted to get my TEFL certification, and a close friend recommended Maximo Nivel in Cusco. I don't know much about other TEFL programs, but I cannot imagine them being any better. 24 hour access to internet was extremely helpful, but 24 hour access to an instructor is unheard of. The TEFL instructor in Cusco, Claudia, is amazing. She clearly loves her job, is very good at it, and she makes it quite clear that for those four weeks she is your personal resource. I fancy myself quite proficient in English, having studied it at a collegiate level, and the "grammar week" of the course put me right in my place. It was intense. I have gotten a job teaching English since, and the notes from my TEFL course have been invaluable. Maximo Nivel doesn't just offer you a certificate, they truly prepare you to be an ESL teacher.

TEFL certification at Maximo Nivel was a great experience! Claudia was an excellent teacher, very funny and always full of energy. She was very dedicated and available throughout the entire course. The course itself contained a lot of work, but all very relevant. There was a lot of practical teaching experience included as well, which helped a lot with preparation.

I became TEFL certified through Maximo Nivel in April 2016. The program was fast paced, but in-depth at the same time. The instructor was very experienced in teaching the course and was able to answer all questions from the TEFL students. Throughout the 4 week program, there were multiple opportunities to teach small groups of students and the final week was full of practical teaching where we taught our own classes. I feel very well prepared to teach English after becoming TEFL certified through Maximo Nivel.

I had the sense that the program was well-planned ahead of time and great pains are taken to make sure things run smoothly for everyone - from making sure all students succeed in terms of learning the TEFL content, to practical teaching, to resources provided at the school, everything ran like clockwork. I definitely feel prepared to teach ESL: the course, the practical teaching, and the physical materials I took from the course are all parts of an excellent foundation.

I had a lot of fun learning how to teach English at Maximo Nivel. The course gave me all the tools I needed to prepare as an ESL teacher. My trainer, Claudia, never ran low on energy and kept lessons entertaining and fun. The most valuable part of the experience was getting the opportunity to teach for a week, fine tuning the techniques I learned in class. The week of teaching was done using a real class with real paying students. This is not something that Online Classes can provide.

This course was incredible. Claudia was one of the best instructors I have ever had the pleasure of taking. The long class hours, 6 hours a day, flew by with Claudia at the helm. The administration were easily the most friendly and approachable administrators I have ever encountered in an academic setting. I would highly recommend this program to any one looking to get Certified in TEFL. Added bonus it's in Cuzco which is an amazing city.

If you want to invest you money in education and get something in return take the Maximo Nivel TEFL course in Cusco,Peru. Only with four weeks time you will become a well-trained and prepared English teacher ready to conquer the world. This TEFL course is by no means a vacation. You will have to work hard and put in all the energy you can but it is well worth it. You will have a supportive staff that is at service almost 24/7 and Mama Clau Clau who will give you a laugh every step of the way. I highly recommend this TEFL course to anyone who is looking for a program in which they will learn and apply the teaching methods. Maximo Nivel is fun filled environment surrounded with enthusiastic students, staff and workers. Also to mention, you have free salsa lessons, cooking class and many activities that will get you hooked. You won't regret it. You money will be put to good use. I am a university graduate with many thousand dollars in debt but I traveled half way across the globe to do this TEFL course. I say don't think too hard, just DO it.

I highly recommend the TEFL program at Maximo Nivel. This was a wonderful experience that was challenging, fun and rewarding. Our class had so much fun on a day to day basis primarily due to the awesomeness of our instructor (Claudia). I would definitely recommend this program, in Cusco, Peru to anyone looking to pursue this route. In addition, the support from the entire International Team and Maximo staff was amazing. They help with any questions and issues that come up from where to eat, shop, and how to have a good time. They also continue to provide information about job opportunities around the world. I completed the Maximo Nivel TEFL program April 2015 in Cusco, Peru and I highly recommend it! I was impressed in the way they conducted their class. The teacher does not "explain" or "lecture" on ESL techniques, rather, she elicits the craft of ESL teaching by proactive immersion. I did not learn in theory, I learned by observing specific ESL techniques in action every day as she taught us using the same methods effective ESL lessons have. The teacher and staff are also not only supportive while you are enrolled in the program but provide guidence post-graduation. They work hard to equip you to be a successful teacher. I'm very glad I did my certification with Maximo!

My experience with TEFL and Maximo Nivel was awesome! I was happily surprised with how friendly and helpful everyone was from the first minute I arrived. Coming to a new country I was very nervous and clueless about where to go and how to find my way around, everyone at Maximo offered a friendly face and a showed a genuine desire to help me with whatever I needed. My course was awesome and I learned so much about what it means to be an ESL teacher and I feel prepared to teach my own classroom anywhere in the world. My trainer was AMAZING! She made the long days enjoyable and filled the course with fun activities and devoted so much of her time to giving us useful critiques and advice to better our teaching styles. I would definitely recommend this program to anyone looking to become TEFL certified, I wouldn't trade my experience for anything!

Not to sound cliche, but TEFL certification at Maximo was amazing and a real game changer. I plan on using the experience and knowledge gained during the course to change my life and see the world! Everything about Maximo was great, but special kudos go to the international department, who were always there to help and extremely friendly, and of course the TEFL teacher Karen Wilke. Karen is a real gem. The world needs more people like her. She was ALWAYS there to help , lend advice, and just be an amazing person. Her teaching style is incredible and she taught us so much in so little time. Im sure the class would have been great with another teacher, but Karen truly made it memorable and most importantly fun!

The TEFL/TESOL certification offered at Maximo Nivel is an intensive, full and exciting course and it has completely exceeded my expectations. I had taken an online TEFL course beforehand and was skeptical about the potential redundancy of going through another program. Needless to say that the two certifications are not comparable ad I feel more qualified to be a teacher after these four weeks than I could ever had been by completing just the online course. Maximo Nivel's emphasis on practical teaching is its strength, and gives sense to every theory and technique learned in the classroom. The outgoing, helpful and resourceful trainer at Maximo Nivel, Karen Wilke, made every day in the TEFL classroom a real pleasure. Finally, the qualified international team provided excellent administration, and were present throughout the program, providing support for all. Amazing course overall, and highly recommended!

I came to the Maximo Nivel TEFL training program after working as a program director for adult continuing education on a university campus. I found the program at Maximo Nivel in Cusco, Peru to be very well designed and professionally challenging. The teacher observations, lesson planning, English teaching techniques, practice teaching and grammar review were great preparation for becoming a confident English teacher. I was especially delighted to have had Karen Wilke as our TEFL teacher trainer. She led our group through a detailed and comprehensive combination of training activities and she modeled English teaching techniques that made all of the lectures and readings come together. Besides being an excellent teacher and trainer, Karen is one of the most enjoyable and absolutely fun and funny people I have had the pleasure to know. If you are considering taking a TEFL training course, I highly recommend Maximo Nivel and expecially Karen Wilke.

I recently completed the TEFL certification program at Máximo Nivel in Cusco, Perú. I came into the program as a previously-certified Spanish and ESL teacher with a few years of teaching experience in the US. Although I technically didn’t need to complete a TEFL course in order to find a job teaching English abroad (with my degree and experience), I chose to do the program to make international job hunting easier, to get to know Cusco in an environment with like-minded people before diving in headfirst, and to refresh my understanding of teaching methodologies. My expectations of the TEFL course here at Máximo Nivel were completely surpassed. The course material and methodologies used are quite different from any that I had previously seen in any education/pedagogy program or professional development course. Within two days of beginning the class, my identity as a teacher had completely changed (for the better!). Having now completed the course and taught English here in Cusco using those new methodologies that I learned, I wish I could turn back time and re-do my teaching at home! I know I am an infinitely better teacher now than when I started. The staff here are incredibly welcoming and supportive; any doubt I (or my classmates) had while attending the program was always immediately and courteously addressed. As a teacher in the USA, I have quite a bit of experience with educational programs, professors and teachers, and current educational practices. I have been in a variety of schools, universities, and educational settings throughout my pursuit of degree in education. However, I have to declare that my experience with Maximo Nivel's TEFL certification program was absolutely phenomenal! I am in love with TEFL in every way, shape and form! To begin with, the curriculum set up not only for the TEFL teachers but also the students that take classes through Maximo Nivel is on par. As I said, I have experience with a variety of curricula, and this hits the mark. Also, the TEFL program is built around a solid set of lessons, models, readings, activities, lectures and practical teaching experiences. Furthermore, the Cuzco TEFL instructor, Karen Wilke, is amazing. She is a professor who truly knows educational theory and best practices yet she also exemplifies what it means to be a thoughtful, reflective practitioner. Throughout the whole course, she was more than available to us for academic, personal and professional inquiries, needs and questions. She offered her wide range of TEFL connections to us with other institutions and countries, and constantly encouraged us throughout the path to our current jobs. Karen is a TEFL teacher, general educator and overall person that I strive to emulate. In addition to the high level of curriculum and instruction, Maximo Nivel offered an incredibly helpful and supportive international team that offered itself to us, the students, at every turn. There were games, activities, talks, visits, chocolate, and so much more, all of which contributed to an overall excellent experience. I just completed a one month hybrid program in Cusco with Maximo Nivel and what an awesome experience it was!! After teaching English at a Canadian college for 27 years, I decided to enrol in Maximo's program to support me in volunteer teaching abroad after retirement. I had read many good reviews prior to enrolling, but once I started the practicum portion in Cusco, I knew I had made the right choice. Foremost, the instructor, Karen Wilke, was absolutely flawless in her teaching abilities, humour, creativity and unflagging support. She gently but firmly moved us through each stage of the practicum, ensuring that we each felt supported. Moreover, the support staff at Maximo Nivel were attentive and sincere. For example, when I had my wallet stolen in a local market one evening, they were there to see me through the chaos of cancelling cards, etc. Our every need was attended to in a prompt manner. The academic standards of the program were impeccable as well. I had researched many other programs before deciding to go with Maximo Nivel as I knew their standards are very high. I would not hesitate to recommend this program and instructor to anyone seeking a high quality program in a fascinating, exotic country such as Peru.

I chose to become TEFL certified because of the future I want for myself. I wanted the ability to travel the world with a (relatively) guaranteed job and I wanted to learn Spanish. I chose to go to Cusco, Peru, not precisely on a whim but certainly without a bucket list of activities to accomplish. Something about the city in everything I read and learned (from those who had grown up there to college courses) just seemed appropriate to me. The two fit together and off I went. Boy am I ever glad I took the leap into the unknown. The staff at Maximo Nivel were always around to help me. The city is outstanding. And the TEFL course is well, WELL worth it. In four short weeks I learned more than I ever thought I could about teaching and language acquisition. My TEFL trainer, Karen Wilke, is a shining human being who made our intensive hours in the classroom a joy. She was able to bring to life the theories we learned by exemplifying them in her own teaching. We also had lots of opportunities to practice what we were being taught throughout the course with supervised mini lessons where Karen would give us individual feedback as well as solicit positive and constructive commentary from our peers. In all, the TEFL course I took at Maximo Nivel has solidified my desire to teach English and helped me figure out why good teachers stand out from the crowd. I am convinced with a bad course or a bad instructor, I would have been ready to return to the states with my tail between my legs. As it is, my dream to travel the world looks like a very do-able possibility. And so, while accommodations were never up to US standards (who really expects them to be?), the staff at Maximo Nivel did everything in their power to make my time here in Cusco comfortable. I don't know when I'll move on to new frontiers, but for now I am certainly enjoying myself here, and so much of that is down to the TEFL course at Maximo Nivel, the sense of community fostered there, and the amazing staff who make themselves available for anything and everything.

This course far exceeded my expectations. It was extremely thorough and the Maximo staff was readibly available and helpful. The teacher, Karen, is one of the nicest and most encouraging people I've met in quite some time. I now feel sufficiently prepared to go out in the world of ESL and rock it. I would highly recommend this course to anyone.

My overall trip was pretty great just because I made it that way by the activities I chose, the people I met, the lovely host family and the beauty I was surrounded with, HOWEVER: First of all the person who coordinated my trip completely forgot to pick me up at the airport at 7am so I was there in the freezing cold until 8am when I finally decided to pay for a taxi in hopes that they knew where I was headed (to Maximo Nivel). ** I met numerous people who had been "forgotten" throughout my stay. Secondly, I told my host family, the office and everyone that I knew that I was going on a trip to Machu Picchu for the weekend after I graduated from the class then I would be back for one more night before my flight to Panama the following day.. When I got home - Maximo Nivel staff took it upon themselves to go through ALL of my things, pack up my backpack and lock it up in my host parent's room to make space for a new person. They had double-booked my room and then blamed it on me and said that I hadn't paid for these extra days. Whether I had paid for these extra days or not (which they still don't have proof that I didn't) they should NEVER have gone through my things and booked the room while I was gone. My host family was even upset about it because they knew my plans!! Most importantly, I got to know my host family very well and I was informed that they hardly get paid enough to supply us with everything we need. I paid $600 for the whole month of stay and they didn't even see HALF of that. So, that means the organization is using it for other things. Sure, that would be ok if they told us that, but on their website they said the price helps a local family whom you will be living with. Many of the other volunteers in the house that I lived with also had money complications or were put into the wrong program or some other related issue. I do not recommend Maximo Nivel, not one bit. I did enjoy my TEFL course, but that is quite separate from the rest of the organization.
