Asian Elephant Field Course
Asian Elephant Behaviour and Community Driven Conservation in Thailand This is a 4 week field course that offers university students the opportunity to join an ongoing research project studying the behavior and ecology of re-wilded Asian elephants in their natural habitat. Students will gain hands-on experience in animal behavior sampling methods, research design, and behavioral data analysis. Students will learn critical thinking and problem solving skills for implementing successful field research protocols, learn the fundamentals of recording and interpreting animal behavior, all while collaborating with indigenous mahouts (elephant keepers) and their community as they work to conserve the forest. By promoting a multispecies approach to conservation, this course not only improves outcomes for animals and the environment, but also recognizes the interconnectedness of human health and well-being. In addition to participating in this vital research, students will have the chance to learn from expert staff, mahouts, and community leaders, and gain cultural immersion. Perfect for students with a passion for biology, ecology, conservation, animal behavior and welfare.

Amazing opportunity in Thailand
January 15, 2025by: Kate Parnin - United StatesI attended the Mahouts Elephant Foundation field course in Thailand during the Summer 2024 session. This was really a once in a lifetime experience that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in elephants or animal behavior. I participated in this program a few months before starting a Master's program as a way to gain experience conducting animal behavior research in the field. The program is extremely well run, taking every effort to make sure students feel prepared before departing to Thailand and supporting students throughout the four weeks. Students stay with local Karen families who are extremely welcoming and happy to share their culture and their beautiful village. Accommodations are basic but sufficient and provide students with a chance to unplug and enjoy nature (if they so choose). Hiking into the forest and spending time with the elephants is truly an incredible and rare experience and all of the staff make sure both the guests and the elephants feel safe and comfortable. I learned so much about how to observe and collect behavioral data from the elephants. The instructors are happy to tailor projects to each students interests and intended goals. For anyone looking to learn more about elephants, animal behavior research, or community based sustainable tourism, I can't recommend this program enough.
A remarkable experience!
January 14, 2025by: Leya Hirakawa-Kao - CanadaI participated in this field course through my university (the University of British Columbia) in 2022 as an undergraduate student in applied animal biology. This program allowed me to fully experience what it was like to be a field biologist. I hiked through some of the most beautiful mountain terrain I've seen, observed elephants exhibit their natural behaviours without restriction, and learned how to effectively take field notes under the expert guidance of Becca and Liv. Although I was fully expecting the elephants to be the highlight of this experience, it was actually the connections and relationships I made with the local Karen community. I was so awe-struck with the community that I even went back the following year to learn more. Thank you, Mahouts Elephant Foundation!

Is there a lot of walking?
The elephants live freely in a very large habitat, this is the best life for them. We therefore need to walk through the forest to visit them, this is their home. The region is mountainous so there are steep slopes to walk up and down. In rainy season it can be muddy and slippery, which is great fun! We ask you to bring appropriate footwear and clothing and ensure you are reasonably fit. Lond sleeves and trousers are advised.
Do I need to bring bottled water and what is the food like?
No! we provide drinking water for your trip. There are multiple water filters throughout the village where you can fill up water bottles. We aim to reduce plastic waste, you can help by bringing a refillable bottle.
You will be provided with three meals a day, each meal is rice or noodle based with various meat and vegetable dishes. We cater for all diets including vegetarian and vegan. It is advisable to bring some snacks with you.
Is there electricity and WIFI
There is no mains electricity or WIFI, however we have very good solar throughout the village for charging. You can easily access mobile data with a local SIM card.
Will I have plenty of support?
Yes! our experienced team are with you throughout your stay and will gently guide you through the process. You will have support fro your studies and any issues arising during your stay, we have a highly skilled team of English speaking guides and leaders.
Do I need to bring money?
We provide all meals while you are with us. There is the opportunity to buy handicrafts such as fabric weaving, you might want to buy snacks fro the local shop which also does the best coffee!
