Australia Pre-Vet Wildlife Medicine
by: Loop Abroad
Veterinary Service: Australia is available as both a high school program (ages 14-18) and a college and young adult program (ages 18-25). This amazing opportunity takes place outside of Sydney, in Calga Springs, where you will live at a ZAA-accredited wildlife sanctuary for two weeks. Your group will be led by a team of veterinarians who help oversee all activities and teach you all about Australian animals. From kangaroos and koalas to frogmouths and pythons, this sanctuary has pretty much any Australian animal you can dream of (except for a platypus). You will get hands-on while learning about marsupials, mammals, birds, and reptiles as well as helping with their upkeep, enrichment, and medical needs. You will work alongside veterinarians and the park staff each day. On weekends, we will head to Sydney for fun activities, including a trip to the Sydney Opera House and some famous beaches. We will also have a behind-the-scenes visit to the veterinary world of the famous Taronga Zoo. An additional adventure week can be added to explore Australia more. College credit and financial aid are available.

January 12, 2023by: Isarah Hester - United StatesI had more fun than I had expected to on this trip! Not only was it easy to open up to the people in my group but it was a fun experience overall. Meeting the different cultures, accents, and way of life was so interesting and I would definitely do it again.

I loved it!
October 18, 2022by: Alyssa Cole - United StatesLoop abroad’s Australia trip is so much fun. You get to spend the entire trip on the wildlife sanctuary learning about Australian culture and wildlife. It is truly an unforgettable experience that I would recommend to anyone!
Loop abroad is amazing!
October 18, 2022by: Alyssa Estes - United StatesI loved my experience with loop abroad in Australia! The walkabout wildlife park is wonderful and amazing hosts. You will learn a lot about Australian wildlife while there. Hands on experience with actual animals/vet experience is a little lacking but that is more for the safety of the animals at the park. When I went, we also only had 1 excursion day + 2 days in Sydney, but otherwise all of our time was spent at the wildlife sanctuary. But overall it was a really amazing experience and I would definitely do it again!
An absolutely lifechanging and eye opening experience
October 14, 2022by: Brianna Horn - United StatesHi my name is Brianna Horn and I had the privilege of studying at Walkabout Animal Sanctuary this summer with Dr. B who is not only a wonderful veterinarian but also an incredible overall human being and was able to teach me about study strategies, public speaking skills, veterinary school advice, and so much more. The girls who were in my group became like my second family and to this day we still are in contact with one another. The living situation was extremely homey and Tas is absolutely the kindest soul you will ever meet and her cooking is truly restaurant quality. I feel so grateful that I was able to have so much hands on experience with so many different species like dingoes, bats, meerkats and so many more. My hope is to go on more loop abroad programs in the future because of how organized and enjoyable the trip is. Loop Abroad has absolutely propelled me in my per-veterinary era and hopefully one day I will come out the other end as a DVM and will be able to thank Loop for everything they have done to help me.

Best experience ever
October 14, 2022by: Shelby Turner - CanadaI had the best time in Australia with the best people and animals I’ve ever met in my life. Not only was this experience educational, but it was a BLAST! I hope I can go back soon to interact with all the wildlife, and make a difference all while travelling the globe.
Great 2 weeks
August 25, 2022by: Alyssa Cole - United StatesThe Australia loop abroad program was awesome! The main experience you get is working as a ranger on a wildlife sanctuary, so you don’t get direct vet experience with that. You also have to stay on the park the entire of the 2 weeks except for when you are scheduled to leave for excursions. But the people at walkabout are amazing and they will teach you so much about the animals that are there. It’s a very cool experience!
My experience in Australia!
August 25, 2022by: Ashley Grassmyer - United StatesI had SUCH an amazing time during my program abroad in Australia. I learned so many useful and practical things that I could take home and use as a Veterinary Assistant as well as about the Australian wildlife. I made life long friends during this program and simply everything about it was amazing; I wish I could go back! I highly recommend taking a trip to the world down under!
Experience of a lifetime
August 25, 2022by: Shelby Turner - CanadaI have never felt so inspired to keep working with animals! This trip allowed me to feel so connected with Australian wildlife all while making a difference within it. I made so many life long friends and connections through this program and I can not thank loop enough for giving me this opportunity!
Once in a lifetime opportunity!
November 30, 2019by: Kayla Gilstorff - United StatesThis experience with Loop Abroad has been unforgettable. The administrators and staff treated us with amazing care and curated a fun and educational trip. They made the ease of traveling to a foreign country very easy and taught us so much about the country we visited. There was little for us to worry about since Loop provided us with a full itinerary including meals. Our living arrangements were amazing as well and each of us had our own space which was amazing. I would definitely recommend this program for others. I made some very good friends on this trip which made it even more memorable.

Best first vet experience abroad!
November 28, 2019by: Sammi - United StatesThis was my first time officially traveling alone to another side of the world and to be able to learn/experience the veterinary field while doing so was just the cherry on top! I really enjoyed my time in Australia, especially because of all the friendly people I met on the way! I flew as a solo flyer and met with the program heads at a meeting point in Australia airport, which was fairly simple to find. While waiting for the rest of the 20 or so girls to land, three other veterinarians introduced themselves and they were all so friendly and inclusive! Working with them was such a blast in itself! Fast forward to the bus ride from the airport to Walkabout Wildlife Park in Calga, the view was stunning and all of us were already making new friends on the way there! The park was so amazing, nothing like I’ve seen before! That’s when we met and ate lunch with our home provider, Tassin! She was such a mother role! She made sure we were all comfortable, cooked us food and made sure of any allergies or special diets, and she was an overall sweetheart! I could tell how much she cared for her park when she told us how it all began (find out for yourselves!)! Regarding our education, we started each day with breakfast around 8, before lectures started which was given by one of four veterinarians! After lectures, we were separated into groups per vet and went to learn/help m the park staff’s work like feeding procedures, cleaning leaf litter, or cleaning the enclosures! We got to meet all the park animals and learned about their history while tending to them! We always made it back for lunch where Tassin makes ahead of time because she’s quite the busy bee! After lunch we would then venture out into groups again or as a whole, depending on what we are doing, and continue our learning! We had labs, field work, handling, feeding, and surgeries! All our activities were timelined and posted on around the house which was super helpful. We had a day trip to Terrigal for a nice break from all the hard work then on the last weekend, we were in Sydney! Learning about the Australian native animals was already so interesting but seeing them in person and connecting with them, it was a whole new experience! I cannot express how fortunate I felt to be able to be apart of such a wholesome program and I can’t thank them enough for it!
I'll remember thia forever
November 27, 2019by: Isabella Flores - United StatesThis program was amazing. I learned so much about so many different animals, some, I didn't even know existed. The employees were adimate about making sure we were safe, but that also we were learning and having fun doing it. They were also so respectful towards the aboriginal people that use to roam the land before, making sure we were educated and why the land was so important. We also had a small classroom session where we learned about the land, plants, trees and how they helped in medicine. I feel so grateful to have gone and learned so much, Australia was truly one of a kind!
Learning overload!
September 02, 2019by: Isabella Flores - United StatesWow. Australia really is so much different and so great! You learn so much about animals that you think you know about but really you go so much deeper. I learned so much just about kangaroos that I couldn't believe some of the facts I was learning was true. Living in the Australian bush was just so relaxing too, you can look up and see the Milky Way. If I have the opportunity to go back, I will in a heart beat.

Once in a lifetime experience!
September 01, 2019by: Hannah Moncrief - United StatesMy experience on the Loop Abroad 2 week Australia trip was nothing less than a dream come true! The trip was extremely safe, overwhelmingly fun, and tremendously educational. I received tons of knowledge about Australian wildlife through both lectures and hands on experience. I had the opportunity to handle and nurture animals that would be hard access come by in America. Along with the education, we also had an equal amount of fun through excursions and day trips in the city. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is considering veterinary, biology, or conservation professions!
Super fun and memorable!
August 30, 2019by: Tayessa Smith - United StatesAs someone who had never traveled outside of the United States before this trip, and had some fears and anxiety going into this, I can honestly say that all of the staff made it very easy and not as scary as I thought it would be. I had the best time on this trip! I learned so much about Australian culture and wildlife. I also learned a lot just from the veterinarians that were there with the group. They shared some amazing stories about some of the cases they had seen as well as how they made it to be so successful in their careers. Working with all of the animals had to be the best part. Learning how to care for each one at the park and then learning how to properly feed them and handle them, it was all amazing! I love the hands-on opportunities that this program has to offer, and I definitely want to go on another trip.

Memorable experience!
August 29, 2019by: Kaitlyn Scheunemann - United StatesI was so nervous going into the start of this program. I wasn't sure what to expect because I didn't know any of the other students and had never been abroad before. I have always dreamed of going to Australia and Loop Abroad made this dream a reality (at an affordable price) and allowed me to gain valuable experiences and advice to prepare me for veterinary school. This experience allowed me to go out of my comfort zone and meet some amazing people that allowed me to make memories that I will forever cherish. Loop Abroad, the veterinarians, the other students, and everyone involved in this program really made me feel at home. I was sad to leave when that day came. Every day was a new adventure, a new animal, and a new experience. I learned a lot and really enjoyed overall this entire experience.

An unforgettable experience!
August 28, 2019by: Dukseon - United StatesThis was my first vet program abroad and i could not have wished for anything better! it was truly an amazing experience to have gone to Australia for two weeks and learning about Australian wildlife and culture! being able to share this experience with 20 other girls who are in the similar paths made it even better! along with the four vets that accompanied us and taught us all the useful information during lecture and activities! our keeper, tassin, and ranger monika were so helpful in everything they did to help us treat Australian wildlife with the upmost care and love! i really saw how much they put their heart into caring for all the wildlife in the park and their love for their culture! we all still communicate with each other and i hope to keep in contact with everyone as well!!
Great experience!
August 28, 2019by: Gabriella - United StatesThis trip was such a great time! I learned things I had never though about before and got to meet a wide variety of Australian wildlife. Talking with the park ranger and zoo vets helped me understand a lot about their daily life and realize potential careers I could have in the future.
A wonderful experience!
August 27, 2019by: Claire Shields - United StatesI had a wonderful time during my 2 week adventure in Australia with Loop Abroad. The veterinarians were so helpful and excited to teach us. They provided great insight on what it is like to be a wildlife/zoo veterinarian. We also gained a lot of hands on experience, such as physical exams and proper handling. I met amazing friends on this trip, and we had so much fun exploring Sydney together and seeing iconic sights, such as the Opera House. Loop Abroad makes sure to balance work and play, which is the thing I love most about the program. I would recommend this program to anyone!
A one-of-a-kind experience down under
August 01, 2018by: Sally Ploch - United StatesI had an amazing time in Australia with Loop Abroad. I learned so much, not only about Australian animals, but about veterinary medicine and conservation in general. The staff from Loop and Walkabout Wildlife Park were amazing guides and extremely knowledgable, and I formed relationships that I’m sure will be helpful in my career as a veterinarian. The behind-the-scenes tour at the Taronga Zoo was especially insightful and unlike any experience at a zoo I’d had before. I would highly recommend this program not only to pre-veterinary students but to any student interested in conservation and wildlife.
Incredible program
July 30, 2018by: Riche Deleveaux - BahamasThis was an amazing experience for me, the program exposes you to so many exotic animals that you learn about and help care for them each day you are there. They have experienced vets working with you every day as well as making the experience and knowledge you are gaining even better. They also plan many cultural learning experiences as well as trips ot explore the country you are in thus not limiting your trip to just vet work.
Australia veterinary service
July 30, 2018by: Sarah Clark - United StatesThis trip was the experience of a life time and really allowed me to use the veterinary skills I had already learned as well as learn new ones. Although I am not planning to into exotic veterinary medicine it was still fascinating to learn so much about Australia’s wonderful animals. The staff also made time to learn about animals we may see everyday such as rabbits and goats which was extremely interesting to me as I want to be a mixed animal practitioner. I also enjoyed learning about the native plants and culture.
Amazing !
July 30, 2018by: Lianes Sanchez - United StatesFor my first study abroad I was happy how well the program turned out! I got to live amongst the kangaroos, wander Australia’s bush while also learning the aboriginal’s culture which was fascinating, but the best part is being able to learn from highly knowledgeable veterinarians about conservation and care of Australia’s wildlife. It was an amazing experience, where I was able to meet people who had the same passion. It was an forgettable trip!
Great experience
July 30, 2018by: Allison Owens - United StatesAustralia with loop abroad was such a great experience! It was so much fun seeing kangaroos hanging out everywhere and being able to learn about them. We even got to shadow some vets at a nearby zoo gaining invaluable knowledge you can’t get just anywhere. Would definitely go back!
Incredible 2 week program!
July 30, 2018by: Jordan Sirois - United StatesLoop Abroad does an amazing job at balancing classroom style learning, hands on experience, and fun! You are sure to leave with lifelong memories, new knowledge, and friends. Loop Abroad’s two week college veterinary program in Australia was one of the best two weeks of my life! This program puts you face to face with incredible animals like koalas, kangaroos, flying foxes, pythons, and so many more you’ve never heard about before. While you’re having the time of your life in a new and exciting country, you’re also gaining hands on experience and knowledge that will last you a lifetime. If animals and traveling are your passion, Loop Abroad is the program for you.
