This is an ideal internship opportunity abroad if your passion lies in social services, human rights, female empowerment, or fighting sexual exploitation. The Support the Survivors of Gender-Based Violence and Human Trafficking program in Quito partners with a nonprofit that focuses on female adolescents who have been victims of sex trafficking in Ecuador. The organization works with the government, receiving rescued girls and providing them a safe shelter. They assist with legal issues, find them a loving family, and include them in the educational system. Your responsibilities as an intern vary, depending on your skills set. You can assist with administrative tasks, creative art workshops, teaching sessions, fundraising for additional resources, and social work. You could also support the girls emotionally in their recovery process. They have gone through the most tragic forms of violence; your time with them will help greatly in rebuilding their confidence and trust towards others.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is human trafficking & why should I volunteer to help survivors?

Human trafficking is a crime where all men, women & children are sold into dangerous situations. Sex trafficking is particularly problematic for women throughout Latin American countries, such as Ecuador, with 75% of those trafficked, sold into sex slavery. Due to a lack of financial aid, victims have limited help. This is why it is crucial to raise awareness and help the rehabilitation of those affected by trafficking.

Can I stay for longer than 1 month?

Yes! This volunteer program is available throughout the year and volunteers can choose to stay from 4 weeks to 12 weeks working on this impactful project!

Are there Spanish lessons available?
