Program Overview

Volunteer abroad with Kaya Responsible Travel and join a project in community development with a health focus. You’ll contribute to the initiatives of a local organization that works with indigenous communities in Quito, Ecuador.

The Rural Public Health Volunteering in Ecuador runs community outreach and provides education on subjects such as avoiding teenage pregnancy, alcohol and drug addiction, and nutrition. Joining this project doesn’t allow you to gain invaluable insight into the common problems facing indigenous communities in the province. It also deepens your understanding of how public health education initiatives are planned and implemented while incorporating traditional and modern views on medicine.

You should be a medical, nutrition, biology, or nursing student to be accepted onto this placement. If you are interested in studying medicine or nursing in the future and are passionate about community development, you may also be considered for this placement. All volunteers must speak Spanish (level B1 Intermediate User of CEFR) to get the most out of this placement and to contribute effectively to the outreach program.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to all the most common questions about Kaya Responsible Travel.

What will I be doing as a Rural Public Health Volunteer?

You will work with a project leader who plans & implements public health education initiatives for the community. The role varies with each volunteer’s area of study or interest (i.e. nutrition, drug awareness or HIV and sexual health education).

Do I need qualifications to be a Public Health Volunteer?

No! Those studying medicine, nursing or nutrition now or in the future will be valued in this project. Volunteers must be:

  • Interested in community development
  • Resilient
  • Good with people
  • Able to speak basic Spanish to communicate effectively

Will there be a language barrier in Rural Ecuador?

Due to the remote location, all volunteers must be able to speak Level B Spanish (CEFR) to be able to communicate effectively, especially due to the nature of the job. If volunteers need lessons on medical vocabulary, this can be arranged for you!

Why volunteer in Rural Ecuador?

Volunteering in rural places ensures that the citizens of poorer, more remote communities benefit from having access to sexual health education, nutrition and drug and alcohol awareness, as healthcare is more limited than larger communities.
