Program Overview

Gain first-hand experience as a physiotherapist at a local community clinic in this internship program in Ghana. The facility is underfunded and understaffed, so your help will be greatly appreciated. You will develop a real understanding of the challenges facing physiotherapists and medical professionals. You could also work with athletes training under local sports institutions.

Your role as a Physiotherapy Intern will mostly involve providing hands-on care and assistance that is otherwise not available to many injured local people and athletes. With the lack of local staff, the demand for physiotherapists is high in Accra. As an intern, you’ll also get the chance to work with educated specialists and teach Ghanaian physiotherapy students.

This is an ideal internship program if you’re interested in gaining further experience within an unconventional environment. You must be qualified or have had some experience in physiotherapy—at least in your second year of study. You need to be self-motivated and prepared for some long and frustrating days. Plus, you are required to have a yellow fever vaccination and obtain a certificate as proof upon your entry to the country.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to all the most common questions about Kaya Responsible Travel.

Why choose this internship in Ghana?

This internship is particularly beneficial as you will be working in two different sectors of physiotherapy. You will gain hands-on experience in a community clinic and around local football teams and private sports facilities. Since the conditions of locals are dependent on their strenuous labor jobs and hypertension strokes, you will provide essential help while being able to gain invaluable experience abroad.

What sort of skills should a Physiotherapy intern have?

As a physiotherapy intern, you should be fully qualified or have at least been in your 2nd year of studies. You should also be motivated and dedicated to the cause, as your work days can be long and tiring, but the experience you gain and the help you give are invaluable!

How long can I intern for in Ghana?

Internships are available to start from 4 weeks - 12 weeks, with the option to extend for an extra fee. The physiotherapy internship takes place all year round, with the exclusion of the 15th of December to the 5th of January.

Why pay for this internship?

The clinic and physiotherapy industries in Ghana are underfunded and understaffed. Your program fees will help provide essential equipment, training, and running costs for the community center and local sports facilities. Not only will you be able to gain extremely useful experience and provide a service, but your fees will continue to help even after your internship is over.

Do I need a visa to complete this internship in Ghana?

You might need a visa to be able to intern in Ghana. You can check this by consulting your local government website, or by reaching out to one of Kaya’s helpful advisors. However, it is required that you receive a yellow fever vaccination when traveling to Ghana, which should be shown upon entry to the country. Without this documentation, you might be refused entry!
