Human Rights Internship in Morocco
Contribute to a project that supports refugees and migrants staying in Morocco. This internship focuses on the concepts of human rights and social justice related to the country’s migration crisis. The placement is at an NGO that promotes the integration of refugees and migrants into society through social assistance, education, and professional training. The organization has a daycare center where parents can leave their children to attend workshops. As an intern, your tasks depend on your skills, background, and interest. You could support project implementation and management, the communication department, event planning, leading workshops (such as English classes, dance, computer science, design, and more), amongst others. You could also communicate with the beneficiaries on the ground, support their journey, and provide a social aspect to their experience at the NGO. This is an ideal internship if you’re interested in migration issues, human rights, social justice, international development, and nonprofit management in an emerging country. If you want to work on the administrative side of this project, the knowledge of French is required.

December 20, 2023by: Calvin Older - United StatesMy internship in Morocco through Kaya was amazing and was a very valuable experience for me. However, improvements can be made in the administration. I was given a brief overview of my internship before arriving (location, supervisor, responsibilities, etc.) But I was assigned to a different location upon my arrival. It wasn't until almost two weeks into my visit when I was able to start working. The housing accommodation had many pluses and minuses. There was no kitchen access, privacy, or refrigerator space, air conditioning, etc. However, the location and design largely made up for it. I was fine with this, but wish that the accommodations were better explained to me before arriving so that I would have better prepared. If there are fixes in the administration and a more in-depth description of the program/housing would have made an already amazing experience greater.

Where will I be staying whilst interning in Morocco?
Your accommodation is included in the price of the internship and will be located in the heart of Rabat’s medina! The volunteer and intern house is a newly renovated Riad which is only just a few minutes walk from local restaurants, cafes, and markets. The accommodation even has a local chef that will prepare your breakfast and dinner along with the other interns and volunteers!
If Morocco safe for solo travelers?
Since you’re completing your internship in such a beautiful place, you will be keen to explore Morocco in your free time and might have some worries about traveling alone. We have helped hundreds of people intern in Morocco and have only had great experiences! Whether you want to travel alone or with the other interns, you should keep your belongings safe and keep other precautions you would take anywhere else in the world!
What sort of impact can I make on this internship?
Morocco became a destination for Sub-Saharan African and MENA region migrants. Migrants have been escaping political unrest and civil wars and trying to make their way to European cities. However, many migrants were forced to stay in Morocco due to fear of deportation. Kaya’s internship works with an NGO that promotes the migrants rights to education, training and social assistance.
What should I pack when traveling to Morocco?
Morocco is a hot country, so be sure to pack according to the weather; sun hats, sunscreen and light clothing. Other things to consider are things like a supply of prescription medication and insect repellent. Try to leave valuables that you would not like to lose or break.
