Family Game Reserve Wildlife Research in South Africa
Program Overview
Let your children learn about and participate in conservation work to protect wildlife species and habitats in this incredible program abroad. The Family Volunteering: Wildlife Research in a Game Reserve in South Africa project takes place in Kruger National Park, home to diverse animal and plant species as well as more than 400 bird species. The data gathered is shared with authorities, conservation agencies, and large-scale projects geared toward species and habitat protection efforts. The project also aims to lessen the impact of human activities through education.
For two weeks or longer, your family can get involved with various activities—species identification, game drives, data recording, tagging, and even game monitoring at night. You are guaranteed the adventure of a lifetime while contributing to projects that focus specifically on rhinos, elephants, buffalos, and big cats in Kruger National Park.
This family volunteering project runs every other Sunday and is open to families with children 12 years and older as well as individual volunteers 16 years and older.

Your family will assist researchers track wildlife, collect data, and engage in educational outreach activities with the community!
Where will we be based in South Africa?
Your family will be based in a beautiful Private Game Reserve in Kruger National Park in beautiful South Africa, home to the famous Big 5. Your days will be spent on the reserve learning about and monitoring the activities of the animals and their habitats. It will give you plenty of opportunities to see the animals in their natural environment.
What is there to do with your family in your spare time?
At night time, you may sit around a fire and exchange stories about your daytime adventures while listening to the sounds of the wild. You may also relax at home by the pool during your free time.
Are there any age restrictions for participating?
Children as young as 6 years old can join their families on this project. It’s an amazing opportunity for kids to be introduced to wildlife and the importance of nature and preserving the planet.
What is the accommodation like on this project?
A comfortable volunteer house with room for all of the family located in a private game reserve in Kruger, South Africa. You’ll have access to all amenities and of course, a great pool where you can cool off after a long day of volunteering and exploring!
