Program Overview

Develop leadership and field studies skills on this internship abroad. Based in a local national park on the hills of the Peruvian Amazon, this project has three main areas of focus: socio-economics, ecosystem services, and biodiversity. Through the study of animal distribution, behavior, and ecology, students will begin to understand the relationship between wildlife and the forest.

The Environmental Conservation Internship in Peru is a skills-based placement lasting more than 6 months. You will alongside project coordinators to carry out research on forest regeneration and the park’s wildlife—including butterflies, birds, reptiles, mammals, and others. Weeks 1–10 is a volunteer phase that involves introduction to all projects, extensive field training, and first aid certification. Weeks 11–12 is Spanish immersion, leisure time, and homestay in Cusco. Weeks 13–24 is the internship phase wherein you act as field staff and run your own project in Community Development or Conservation Research.

Why is this internship available for 6 months only?

This internship is structured so interns can gain the most from their experience in Peru. It’s split into 3 phases:

  1. Weeks 1-10: Sustainable community and nature conservation volunteering with first aid certification
  2. Weeks 11-12: Spanish immersion with homestay in Cusco where interns can spend their time leisurely
  3. Weeks 13-24: Internship phase focused on expanding practical skills, depending on your interests and specialities!

What skills should I have to join this internship?

Interns should be studying or have graduated with a degree related to environmental science and must have a basic level of Spanish to join this internship program in Peru.

What is the accommodation like?

Accommodation is a big part of the experience interning in the Peruvian rainforest. Interns stay in a rainforest lodge, with a shared room and bathroom as well as a communal living space.

What kind of training is included in this internship?

Aside from the intern’s specialized training in their internship area, such as environmental science, zoology or conservation biology, interns also receive training in the following:
