You will deal with a range of impairments and disabilities—intellectual, mental, physical, and communication, amongst others. The center’s staff comprises qualified professionals in a range of fields, including social, psychology, and physiotherapy. You will assist in their daily tasks as well as help the patients in all capacity, from living their daily life to improving their psychomotor skills. Depending on your skills and interests, you can also contribute to the center’s primary and secondary school, assisting students and implementing activities or programs. No particular skills are required to participate in this project. However, participants with a background in childcare or special needs are greatly appreciated. A basic level of Spanish is required (level A1 Basic User of CEFR) to enable you to communicate and make the most out of this placement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a qualification to do this internship?

No particular skills are required to participate in this internship! However, participants with previous experience or with a background in childcare or working with special needs would be highly valued!

I don't speak Spanish can I still intern in Peru?

Yes! A basic understanding of Spanish is highly advantageous, however, not necessary. If you’re looking to brush up on your Spanish skills, or looking to start as a beginner, Kaya can arrange an extra 10 hours of Spanish classes for only £85/$149. If you do, make sure you tell one of the advisors whilst applying, or request a call back to ask more detail!

What sort of tasks will a special needs therapy intern do?

The interns will help the patients in all capacity including improving their speech therapy, psychomotor skills, and living their day-to-day life at the centre. Interns will assist in other tasks like serving meals, helping at toilet breaks and also organise their own classes or workshops based on their skills and interests!

What sort of support will I receive on this internship?

The support you receive from Kaya before, during and after your internship is first class! You will receive pre-departure information to prepare you for your trip. Once you begin your internship, you will be given any orientation and onsite training necessary, and of course receive support from the project managers on the ground. Interns can also contact Kaya’s advisers at any point during their internship; they are available 24/7.

What if my question isn't answered here?

That's easy, you can reach out to Kaya’s expert advisors who can answer all of your questions or concerns! You can either request more information through requesting a brochure, or request a call back, and schedule a time that works best for you to chat!
