Make a lasting, positive impact at a school in Peru with limited resources—one teacher handles all subjects across all grade levels. As an Education Intern at this primary school, you’ll help the teacher with basic subjects such as Reading, Science and Mathematics. You’ll also assist with lessons and activities focused on environmentalism. For 4–12 weeks, gain a deeper understanding of the operations and needs of a small school located outside Cusco. Support their activities and any improvement projects, including the maintenance of a special garden and mural painting. You will also lead workshops for parents and community members, focusing on topics like English language, sanitation and recycling. At the end of your internship, you’ll assess the school’s resources and gather information vital to the application of grants or development of fundraisers. Available every Monday throughout the year, this Education Internship in Peru program is open to participants with some experience in the classroom as well as in structuring and leading lessons. There are no language requirements for this internship, but basic-intermediate Spanish is helpful and recommended.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do interns need previous experience working in a classroom to apply?

Previous experience of working or assisting in a classroom environment would be beneficial but is not required. Also, interns don’t need to know Spanish, but a basic understanding of the language is recommended so that you can receive the best out of this experience!

What does an education intern do?

Interns are responsible for creating exciting and engaging academic lesson plans that contribute to youth development skills. Interns should arrive with a clear idea of which subject they can structure workshops on and teach based on their interests or skills. They have the chance to get involved with fundraising goals and activities if that’s something of interest.

Where is the internship based in Peru?

Interns will work in Cusco, the ancient Capital of the Inca empire in the middle of the Peruvian Andes. Cusco is a UNESCO world heritage site and mixes an interesting mix of architecture with Inca ruins and Spanish colonialism.

What sort of training will I receive on this internship?

All interns will receive supervision from qualified teachers and help structuring their lesson plans. They will also receive the following;

  • Cultural orientation
  • Onsite and project induction
  • Safety orientation

Can I learn some Spanish before I start my internship?

Yes! Kaya offers extra Spanish classes so interns that want to brush up on their speaking skills or start from scratch, can do so! Kaya offers this at just £85/$149 for 10 hours and can be arranged through the placement advisors - just get in touch!
