Program Overview

Volunteer abroad in a project that provides an education center for Cambodian children from the surrounding poor communities. With the help of local tradesmen and volunteers, our partner has constructed a school attended by more than 300 kids. With the increasing number of students, the school is in continuous need of new buildings, toilets, pathways, and other facilities.

Your placement starts with a one-week orientation dedicated to learning about the pace of life, customs, and traditions in Cambodia. You will visit temples and take part in a Q&A session with local monks to learn about Buddhism. You will also take basic ‘survival’ language classes and learn traditional cooking techniques. In the next few weeks, depending on the length of your stay, you will engage in light construction work for 4–5 hours a day. Your tasks may include building sanitation facilities, renovating playgrounds, and painting.

This project doesn’t require specific construction skills as you will learn on-the-go. If you have an artistic talent, you’ll have the opportunity to decorate walls with murals.

Do you need a visa to volunteer in Cambodia?

For short term placements in Cambodia, you will need a type T visa (tourist visa). If you are staying longer than two months, you will need to ask for visa type E (employment visa). Both visas can be applied for and paid on arrival in Cambodia.

Why is construction volunteering important?

Construction volunteering is an important placement which has many benefits to:

  • The progress community projects and charities are making in Cambodia.
  • The quality of life for citizens in Samraong.
  • Your growth and personal development as an individual.

Can I volunteer with a friend or partner?

Absolutely! We encourage partners or groups of friends to apply to our placement programs. Work together as a team, gaining practical experience and making a sustainable difference, all whilst creating memories that will last a lifetime!

I have no experience as a construction volunteer. Can I still apply?

This volunteer project is definitely a learn-as-you-go type of placement, so you wont need any prior experience in construction work. What's more exciting, if you have an artistic flare, you will help create wall murals with the locals.

How do I know I am safe on my placement?

You may have concerns, but you don't need to be worried! You always receive training before doing any form of construction work. If you still feel like you have questions, read our general safety blog or reach out to one of our placement advisors!
