- Agriculture and Farming in Otaki, Japan
Agriculture and Farming in Otaki, Japan
Farms in the small Japanese village of Otaki are nestled away in the hills, where many residents cultivate vegetables and crops, while some raise animals. They sell their produce at local markets or regional supermarkets. However, as the younger generation moves away from the countryside, those who remain find the work increasingly challenging. As a volunteer, you help with varied tasks depending on the season. Spring, Summer, and Autumn: -Work outdoors planting, fertilizing, plowing, and protecting crops from animals. -Assist with harvesting seasonal produce and maintaining fields. -Expect 2-5 hours of work daily, often starting in the early morning. Late Autumn: -Focus on indoor activities like processing harvested crops, meal preparation, and crafting traditional goods. -Support local farmers with snow removal or other seasonal needs. -Indoor work typically lasts 2-4 hours per day. Cultural Activities: Participate in local traditions, such as learning crafts, visiting markets, and joining shared meals with the farmers. Explore nearby landmarks, go on scenic hikes, or enjoy evenings connecting with your fellow participants and the local community.
