Unforgettable experience immersing in local culture

April 04, 2023by: Jennifer Zheng

Overall, the program experience was great, and I really enjoy my time on the program. The local team is very friendly and when I need assistant, they are always there. During my stay, I was placed at two different schools, high school for week one and kindergarten for week two. Both were valuable experiences and I have learn a lot from them. I feel like both myself and the two schools I stayed at have benefit from this volunteer program. It was definitely an unforgettable experience, and the best way to immerse into the local culture which is a very different feeling from a tourist setting. As my ticket home is booked for a couple days later, I have a few extra days to stay in Xian and explore the city a bit more and visit places nearby. Although my work on the program have ended, the local team have been very helpful and have provided me many suggestion and information on where I could visit and stay for these few days. Lastly, with this being a positive and unforgettable experience, I will definitely be back in the future or try programs in different locations around the world. Thank you so much for all the support along the way!

This experience was amazing and definitely one of the best things I have ever done. I got to teach English to kids from preschool to middle school. Everyone was just so loving and excited to meet me. I had a great time spending time with everyone and learning about the Chinese culture and lifestyles. I will definitely do this again in the future!

    Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Rural Teaching in Guangxi programme involve?

You volunteer in rural village schools teaching English to children aged about 6 to 18. You help with lessons, lead creative and interactive activities like arts, crafts, songs and games, and support local teachers with planning and classroom tasks.

Who can volunteer and what are the requirements?

You need to be at least 16 years old (or older) to join. Adults must provide a criminal background check; 16–17 year olds need parental consent (and possibly character references if a background check is not available). All volunteers must speak English and have travel insurance. Families are welcome.

When can I start and how long can I volunteer?

New sessions start on the first Monday of every month. You can commit for 1 to 12 weeks depending on your availability. Volunteers typically work up to 5 hours per day.

What impact does the programme aim to make?

By volunteering, you help provide access to quality English education in rural communities where teachers are in short supply. You help young people improve their language skills, creativity and confidence — potentially improving their future education and employment opportunities.

What accommodation and support are included for volunteers?

Volunteers stay in a volunteer house provided by the programme, usually shared with other volunteers. The programme includes meals, airport pickup (for eligible arrivals), orientation on arrival and full in-country support. Basic amenities like beds, shared bathrooms and laundry facilities are provided.
