Help improve local infrastructure for small village schools and communities on the island and surrounding areas. You will assist with building and upgrading ablution blocks, painting, performing small construction tasks, carrying out repairs and general maintenance that make buildings safer, more functional and more attractive for those who use them. Much of Madagascar faces a shortage of resources for community infrastructure so your work enables new and improved facilities to be completed and made available for community use as soon as possible. You may also help with transporting supplies by boat, so physical fitness, stamina and adaptability are important. This program is ideal for volunteers who enjoy manual work, are open minded and ready for hard work in a tropical, humid climate. You do not need previous building experience because local staff guide you, but willingness to learn, respect for local culture and a cooperative attitude are essential. In your free time you can enjoy island life, explore beaches, meet locals, discover Malagasy culture, and experience the natural beauty of Nosy Komba while making a tangible difference in the community.

Madagascar was a meaningful volunteer experience

January 23, 2019by: Emilee Miller - United States

My time in Madagascar could be best described as educational and adventurous. I learned so much while also always actively participating in my projects (construction/community & teaching), camp fun, outings, etc. There was never a dull moment, though there were moments that needed to be approached with a mora mora (slowly) mindset. The other volunteers, the staff, the locals, and anyone else I might be forgetting -- they made this experience worthwhile and life-changing. I made some lifelong friends in the 4 weeks I was volunteering, and I think that is an amazing thing. Madagascar is a beautiful country with so much to see. Camp was always kept tidy and the food provided is really pretty good -- it may get a little repetitive, but there is nothing wrong with that, especially when you are feeding large amounts of people.
