My volunteer experience in Porto, Portugal

March 19, 2026by: Shivani Rajkumar Kandiah - Canada

My experience with the volunteer organization was incredibly positive from start to finish. The application process was very straightforward and easy to navigate, which made getting started stress-free. I felt well-supported and there was an abundance of helpful information provided about how to get settled and get by in Portugal, which made adjusting to a new environment much easier. What truly stood out to me was how hands-on the program was. I initially expected that my role would mainly involve taking care of the children, but it turned out to be so much more meaningful than that. I was given the opportunity to connect not only with the children but also with the young moms. Being able to share stories, experiences, and build genuine relationships with them was something I hadn’t anticipated, but it became one of the most rewarding parts of my time there. Overall, I absolutely loved the program. It exceeded my expectations in every way, and I’m so grateful for the experience and the connections I was able to make.

IVHQ made it easy to network and connect with other people from around the world. I truly enjoyed my stay at the hostel in Estoril, Portugal. The rooms were very clean as well as the bathrooms. They were mopped every day and wiped clean. I met some of my closest friends and really enjoyed how nice and laid back my coordinators were, they were very easy to get along with. I also enjoyed my volunteer experience with the animal shelter, it was very hands on and exactly what I expected and wanted to be apart of.I’m

First time volunteering , didn't disappoint !

I had a great time on the Forest Conservation project in Lisbon. My first time away from home for 2 weeks travelling on my own. Wish I'd done it sooner ! The information and support before during and after has been amazing from IVHQ. I felt very safe throughout , the local team were great. I enjoyed the hostel and meeting lots of new people from different countries. I was able to just be me. I hope to do more travelling and volunteering with IVHQ as it's a brilliant way to combine an interest with a safe and well organised project team as back up if needed. It's great socially too !
