I learned so much more than I thought I would

I learned so much more than I thought I would about the different types of trash that litter the New Zealand beaches. I think it is really cool how the Sustainable Coastlines program addresses the issue by collecting and entering data into a global database on the types/amounts of trash we find on the beaches, so that the most impactful environmental laws/regulations can be proposed and supported using data that we have contributed to. I feel that I am actually doing really important work and not just picking up litter. One of my first days on the program, we had gone to one of the beaches and collected an astonishing 600+ firework casings and shells. The program is very engaging and inclusive and I found myself eager to start working each day. There is also plenty of time on the weekends to visit some iconic New Zealand tourist attractions, like Hobbiton and Glow Worm caves. I am very happy that I decided on the Sustainable Coastlines program and I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking to do environmentally impactful volunteer work and have a fun adventurous time doing it!

The information I received pre-departure was very helpful and complete. The local team was amazing! All of them were very professional and helpful. We stayed in stone huts on the island, it was awesome. My favorite moment from the volunteer experience was meeting the other volunteers and staff who made it possible.

Reef CI - exceptional!

This was a great program for our family to participate in! We were looking for an opportunity to make a difference in the world, learn and have fun. This was it! Reef CI and IVHQ made the details easy to navigate and understand with great communications before, during and after our trip. Online training before the trip was meaningful. Our stay on Tom Owens Cay was excellent. The staff was excellent, food was plentiful and there was more than enough for everyone. The conservation portion of the trip was great, diving was excellent and the instructors were safe, knowledgeable, cared about the environment and the program. From the first day, we were given classes on exactly what we would be doing and why it was important. Instead of just diving to look at the environment, we felt like we were part of the environment and making a difference. We wished we had stayed for another week!
