As a Paramedic Science student, the internship broadened my understanding of global health

February 07, 2026by: Kirsty Setchell

One of the aspects I enjoyed most about my internship in Tanzania was the opportunity to immerse myself in a different culture while working closely with local community members and professionals. Building relationships with people from diverse backgrounds allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of the challenges and strengths within the community. I particularly enjoyed contributing to activities that had a positive impact on people’s wellbeing and seeing how small actions could make a meaningful difference. The internship contributed significantly to both my personal and professional development. Personally, it increased my confidence, independence, and adaptability. Living and working in a new environment challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone, develop resilience, and improve my problem-solving skills. It also enhanced my cultural awareness and appreciation for different perspectives. Professionally, the experience strengthened my communication, teamwork, and leadership abilities. Working alongside local staff and volunteers taught me how to collaborate effectively within multidisciplinary teams and adapt my communication style to different audiences. The placement also reinforced the importance of empathy, professionalism, and community-centred practice. As a Paramedic Science student, the internship broadened my understanding of global health issues and provided valuable experience that will support my future career in healthcare and public service.

This experience has allowed me to grow personally and have a lot more confidence in myself.

I really enjoyed the people I was able to meet from all over the world. Being able to collaborate with people from different backgrounds was truly inspiring and such a good educational experience. I also feel this experience has allowed me to grow personally and have a lot more confidence in myself. I believe this was a great educational experience as I learned so much, especially in topics that could never be taught in school. I appreciate the guidance about the program as it really helped me with my decision on choosing to do the program. I was personally really pleased with my accommodation, as that played a big role into why I had such a great experience.

I enjoyed fostering relationships with people in my accommodation and my community.

I enjoyed fostering relationships with people in my accommodation and my community. These relationships helped me build my confidence and openness to new people. I came out of my shell and ended up making really good connections building my personal and professional development skills in the workplace.
