This internship experience was incredibly fulfilling.

The staff at Intern Abroad HQ provided reliable and consistent support throughout my experience. Their open communication and willingness to help were very much appreciated and made the entire program feel well organized and supportive. This internship experience was incredibly fulfilling. I truly enjoyed immersing myself in the local culture through the food, meaningful conversations with my homestay family, and exploring Cusco on my own. One of the most rewarding aspects of the experience was the opportunity to learn from the patients at my clinic. Hearing their stories, building connections, and witnessing their resilience made my time there both personally meaningful and professionally inspiring.

My host family made the stay that much better and easier!

I absolutely adored my host family! Super kind and very welcoming, I am leaving with so many amazing memories with them! They made the stay that much better and easier. Being welcomed into a family with open arms was not what I was expecting, yet I will cherish it forever!! My internship was a great experience and I am leaving with a new mindset and understanding of mental healthcare!

To say the internship changed my life would be an understatement.

I interned with IAHQ after having just earned my degree in international relations and was eagerly looking for my first role post-college. Having several study abroad experiences already, I set my sights on positions outside the US. That's where IAHQ came in. I felt like IAHQ met me with the same enthusiasm and hope I had as a fresh graduate. We worked together to figure out my strengths and see where I could be a fit for their partnerships in South America. I was matched with a marketing internship in Cusco, Peru. Dallas was my program manager. She was available at what felt like all hours of the day/night for every question I could think of! I felt so prepared boarding my flight to Peru and even as I settled in, I knew Dallas and the whole team at IAHQ were behind me. To say the internship changed my life would be an understatement. I worked on translating my placement's website, taught adult English classes, worked the field assisting in home nutrition visits, and even got to help in their pastry program. It was through my work as an intern that I found a full-time job to stay in Cusco! I became a coordinator for a tourism agency there and stayed for about two more years. Intern Abroad HQ will set you up for success, help you forge lasting friendships and professional connections, and cheer you on every step of the way! If you are at all curious about working outside your country and boosting your resume, you can reach out with confidence!

This experience was far better than I ever could have imagined!

This experience was far better than I ever could have imagined! From the wonderful homestay to the amazing things that I got to learn/do in the clinic, I couldn't have asked for anything better! My host family was extremely nice and supportive the entire time. They went above and beyond to make me feel included in Peru. I feel like I learned so much in the clinic and working with the national track team of Peru. I will definitely use all of these skills in my job in the future! Thank you so much for this wonderful opportunity!

It was incredibly meaningful and unforgettable

Everything was perfect overall—thank you so much for the excellent guidance and support! What I enjoyed the most was having the opportunity to be present and assist with three baby deliveries—the first ones I’ve ever experienced. It was incredibly meaningful and unforgettable. This internship helped me understand how the health system works in Peru, especially in a small clinic setting. It also deepened my understanding of the importance of empathy and human connection when treating patients, which will definitely influence the way I approach care in the future.

I really enjoyed interning alongside others

What I enjoyed the most is how during my internship, I was placed with other students that were on the same career path as me. This made me happy and eager to keep on going with my goals. The doctors there were also great and learning about their culture was very interesting to me.

I really got to learn a lot!

What I enjoyed the most was just the experience of shadowing professionals in another country and getting to witness how the work is conducted in Peru. Luckily, all the professionals were really lovely, encouraged me to ask questions and explained the different diagnoses, treatments etc., so that I really got to learn a lot!

For me, participating in an internship abroad was a way to fulfill some professional and personal aspirations I’ve had for a long time. I was so incredibly excited to travel to a country that spoke a language I loved. Traveling overseas to a Spanish speaking country like Peru, was going to allow me to work with a variety of students with their English language skills, while also improving my own Spanish language abilities. I’ll always treasure my relationship with my supervisor and all the amazing interns I met. I have developed a greater love of the Spanish language and associated cultures, which I want to continue to explore. Through such exploration I intend to lay a foundation for both professional and personal enrichment, as I wish to make travel and interactions with various others a part of my life.

The ability to be fully immersed in the Spanish language was what I enjoyed most.

The ability to be fully immersed in the Spanish language was what I enjoyed most. I definitely feel like my Spanish skills have improved greatly after this experience, and it was wonderful to learn about Peruvian culture. My internship involved travelling to a local centro de salud in the city of Cusco to shadow and assist doctors and nurses. I assisted the obstetrician, the nurses in the children’s department, and the doctor in the general medicine area. It has shown me the inner workings of a medical clinic, allowing me to familiarise myself with the routines and protocols involved. I am on the path to become a Physician Assistant, and I have also learned that I really enjoy working with kids, meaning that a future in Paediatrics may be ahead!

There is no doubt that my internship has contributed to one of my major goals; to make small but important social change

There is no doubt that my internship has contributed to one of my major goals; to make small but important social change, and improve the education and mental wellbeing of young people. My role involved helping children of various ages with homework tasks, including support with anything from colouring in to long-multiplications or reading problems (and much more!) I have learnt so many transferable skills being on this internship that would be especially useful in a teaching career. It pushed me to demonstrate professionalism and exercise patience; a necessity if I want to work with children, or even if I want to manage people for a creative arts business or work for an NGO.

I learned a lot about what kind of work environment I want in the future

My internship experience taught me how to work with people across communication and cultural barriers/differences. As a result of this internship, I gained translation skills and improved international marketing techniques. Being around the children also taught me a lot about myself and who I want to be moving forward. I learned a lot about what kind of work environment I want in the future. Everything I have learned - and the work I have done on myself - are among the most successful things I accomplished while in Peru.

This trip and internship have changed my life!

This trip and internship have changed my life! The internship has given me insight into the medical world and also helped me in improving my Spanish. Working in a clinic, I was able to gain valuable medical experience, but also benefit the community that was served in the clinic. This experience has changed my outlook on the role of medical professionals, and has helped in my decision to pursue my career as a Physician Assistant. The culture in Peru is amazing, and I hope to go back in the future!

This internship provided me with some entry-level medical experience

September 22, 2022by: Anjeza Hoxhallari

Considering my long-term goal is to become a PA, this internship provided me with some entry-level medical experience. Although it was in a different country, it was valuable to see how medicine is practiced differently between two countries (U.S and Peru). Learning how to evaluate patients, do physicals, checkups, vitals, vaccinations and teach patients how to improve their health, I believe is a valuable step forward to my long-term goal. I used my skills that I had learned from back home to help with medical treatments and diagnosis. This knowledge provided me the ability to help the medical staff, however there were many times that I had to learn different ways of how to do things based on the Peruvian medical system. Every time something was performed by the medical staff I carefully observed and sometimes would note that things were done differently in the U.S and they were interested to know how.

The whole experience became something that I will always keep in my heart

The whole experience became something that I will always keep in my heart, it was just an amazing opportunity that I will never forget. The internship was a great experience for me to try different specialties in a short-term period, which helps me to pre-select what would give me joy to work on in the future. I am already missing the clinics a lot. I feel more confident, I feel more skilled, and have acquired knowledge that I know I can use in future.

I really was feeling pretty unsure about everything

When I went into this experience, I really was feeling pretty unsure about everything. I had so many questions about the entire process, and the staff made sure all of my questions were answered and that I was sufficiently prepared for my trip. Once I got to Cusco, I was able to find a perfect balance between getting experience at the clinic and exploring the city. Throughout my time there, Intern Abroad did a great job of checking in and making sure that I was getting the most of my experience. I loved meeting so many people there, and I loved the work I got to do in the clinic there. In the clinic, I got to shadow the various doctors and learn a lot about medicine and the healthcare system in South America. I also got to learn a great deal of Spanish in the country. Overall, I had a great time, and I cannot wait to go back to Peru one day in the future!

I can’t wait for my next internship trip!

I had the opportunity to work with a local midwife in Cusco, Peru this summer and it was fantastic! I worked with her side-by-side visiting patients in their homes, where we assessed their vitals, monitored their progress, assessed newborn vitals, conducted consultations, and held group antepartum classes/support sessions. I learned so much about the process of antepartum care, birth plans, health and wellness, and ancient Peruvian techniques for pain management and coping with labor and delivery. I worked with the midwife for 8 weeks, traveling with her to the Sacred Valley to see her patients two or three times a week. The days were very long, we usually left Cusco around 7am and got back around 10pm, sometimes later. There were three or four deliveries during the time I was interning, but unfortunately, I was not able to attend any of them. I think this was due to the language barrier (fluent Spanish is definitely necessary) and the haste required to travel to the Sacred Valley when delivery was imminent. I also took Spanish lessons during my internship. The lessons were great, and they organized weekly outings/events/parties for the interns, so it was super easy to meet people. I made a good group of friends there and we had tons of fun! I recently travelled to the UK and met up with a few of the friends I met in Peru :) Intern Abroad HQ was wonderful in helping me prepare for my trip. They were always there to answer questions, provide information, help me book excursions, and make sure everything was taken care of before I left. The insurance I got through them was also great, I got food poisoning and had to stay in the hospital overnight and everything was completely taken care of. Everything with them was perfectly smooth and easy, I can’t wait for my next internship trip!

Best decision I made

Best decision I made - I was in Peru for four weeks and worked in a physiotherapy setting. The clinic I worked at was only a 15-minute walk from my home stay and was very convenient and safe. The program descriptions matched with what I did at the clinic, so there were not any surprises. My program coordinator with Intern Abroad HQ was always so quick to respond if I had any questions, however the internship manual has a lot of the information you need prior of departure. The only mistake I made with booking with Intern Abroad HQ was that I did not stay long enough. I learned so much and will definitely be doing another internship with them in the near future.

I learned so much through my internship experience at the clinic

I learned so much through my internship experience at the clinic. I came to Peru with the goal of improving my Spanish, as well as gaining medical experience in a culturally different setting. Not only have I grown professionally as a nurse, but I have also grown personally. I was able to develop strong relationships with the nurses at the clinic, and it helped enhance my learning. I was also able to learn a lot about pediatrics and how it differs from the care given in the United States. Even though the patients that came in were receiving routine care, I still learned something new almost every day. During the internship, I had an amazing experience with my host family - Ana Maria and Carlo. They welcomed me into their home from the very first day. Living with a family that was not my own was a scary thought, but I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. I felt safe and comfortable in the home, and they were very supportive and accommodating to my needs. They are the type of people who truly want to give students an immersive cultural experience by living with a host family, and l am truly going to miss them. Words cannot describe how much I enjoyed my experience in Peru. My personal and professional goals that I set prior to coming to Peru were met. The staff is a great group of people that always welcome you with a warm smile, the activities every week helped me bond and create some great friendships with awesome people, and the support that the local team offers to help us succeed and make the most of our time here is limitless. Cusco is such a great location to intern in because there is so much to do in see during our time here. Three months was not nearly enough time.

One of the best experiences

One of the best experiences… I had the most amazing time when I travelled to Peru with Intern Abroad. The family that I stayed with was so nice and caring and helpful. I did one of the medical projects and got to work at a local mom/baby clinic and travel to other local schools to work with kids. Everyone who helped organize the program was really great and could answer any questions I had. Overall, my experience was so much fun and I would definitely use Intern Abroad HQ again.
