Program Overview

Fascinated by the human past, IGS and Wellington's premier city museum have teamed up to offer an unequaled opportunity to learn about and share the fascinating story of New Zealand's capital city. The museum itself is housed in one of the finest and most architecturally significant heritage buildings in the country. It exhibits both social history, as it relates to the city, as well as the maritime history of the region. This internship offers an opportunity to gain real, hands-on experience working with trained professionals. Before jumping into your role, take the time to learn about the exhibits displayed on the museum's three floors. Once familiar with these, put your knowledge to the test by assisting Visitor Services and sharing Wellington's exciting history as you go. The museum features a new exhibition every few months, with the preparation demanding hard work and lots of behind-the-scenes tasks. Get involved in this ever-changing, challenging area of the museum. If you're interested in research, spend time in Research Service. No matter your interests and skills, the museum is willing to work with you to guarantee an unforgettable internship.

Cointerns are great to hang out with

as an introvert who literally only likes museums and history, I am kinda stressed about being abroad and having to deal with a lot of people. but I am happy that my cointerns are great to hang out with and very considerate. on my internship, i saw the "real world" in museums, the background work, the research stresses, the people behind the presentations, the efforts to make everything aesthetically pleasing. super excited for the next batch of interns!

Shoutout to Miss Sharon!!

Shoutout to Miss Sharon! My IGS mentor in Manila, for the museum internship. She guided me all throughout my internship in the Philippines' National Museum and even toured me in the famous places there like the Rizal Park, Intramuros, Fort Santiago, and the Ocean Park!! The accommodation I got was very near the workplace and also near the city hall so I feel safe. Filipino people are nice and very welcoming to foreigners. I am blessed to have a mentor like Miss Sharon who even volunteered to give me a letter of recommendation! Hoping to be a curator like her, too.

Paris museum

Paris was a long shot. I didn't know I could qualify for an internship in one of the most romantic and historically-rich cities in the world. I was thrilled that the Institute for Global Studies gave me an opportunity to fulfill my dreams! As a museum intern, we are given orientations and are trusted to talk to some museum-goers to discuss with them some pieces of art there. I was also given some research work for papers and captions for their campaigns. Learned a lot!
