As a city that has been built and rebuilt over the past century, Berlin remains a city of contrasts—and of innovation. Today, the city is a hot spot for the arts, sciences, and alternative life scripts providing the creative fuel for a lively cultural scene: theater, music, film, and art. At the same time, Berlin has always been a lab for innovative urban planning, sustainable architecture, and environmentally friendly mobility. Course-related trips are integrated to provide a firsthand look at Berlin’s architectural innovations, sustainable design, and rebuilt infrastructure, as well as its cultural and political movements. As part of your coursework, you might tour Berlin's memorials and monuments to explore the politics of memory in the urban landscape, or trace the local sites of a Berlin based movie you have analyzed in your film class.

Best decision of my undergrad career

Since I only had 2 years left at my new school, I wanted to make the best of it and take advantage of every opportunity that presented itself. I chose IES Abroad Berlin because I wanted to practice my German and learn more about German architecture. I learned so much through hands-on activities, field trips, and the wonderful professors who seemed to love what they taught. There were many opportunities to travel on weekends or just hangout in Berlin and learn more about its history through museums and memorials. For anyone looking to study abroad in Germany, I highly suggest IES Abroad Berlin. There is so much to learn about in that beautiful city and it seemed that even with 8 weeks of classes, I didn't even skim the surface.

Do I need a visa to study abroad in Germany?
For U.S. citizens, Germany does not require a student visa before studying abroad. Once you arrive in Germany, you'll need to obtain a German Residence Permit, which Center staff can support with.
Do I need to speak German to participate in this program?
No. Students enrolling in the IES Abroad Berlin Summer - Urban Studies & Culture program do not need any prior German language knowledge. Courses are offered in English, alongside German-taught courses for eligible students.
How many credits can I earn?
With the IES Abroad Berlin Summer - Urban Studies & Culture program, students will take a minimum of 6 credits, with an additional optional 3 credit course if they choose.
