Program Overview

Ancient Greek medicine emerged at the intersection of sacred healing, philosophy, and observation, shaping ideas about health, ethics, and medical practice that continue to influence healthcare today.

This interdisciplinary, field-based course explores how Greek healing evolved from the sacred practices of Asclepius and Apollo to the ethical and clinical foundations of Hippocratic medicine. Students examine preventive care, well-being, purification rituals, therapeutic pilgrimage, sanctuary healing, and the development of systematic medical observation.

Greece serves as a living learning environment where ancient healing traditions can be explored in the landscapes where they developed. The course combines seminars with supervised field-based learning in Athens, Delphi, and the Cyclades, including academic excursions to Naxos, Delos, and Mykonos that connect sacred healing with the emergence of early scientific medicine.

Developed and delivered by the Hellenic Center for Interdisciplinary Studies and Research (HCISR) in Greece, the program provides U.S. academic credit through Arcadia University, which serves as the School of Record.
