Women lifting women

February 11, 2025by: Valerie McIntoshProgram: Women's Empowerment Project in Nepal

Being on a career break, I came to Nepal and volunteering on the Women's Empowerment Project with an open mind, and left thriving. It was more than just supporting women with English, professional and career skills, it was women lifting women. From the invaluable support and advice of the women at GVI, being empowered and challenged outside of our comfort zones, holding space for each other, authentic human connection, laughter, the spirit of the women and children, making friends for life, and supporting each other's growth. I left with a full tank and will treasure this experience forever.

The sense of community is overriding.

My experience in Nepal volunteering with GVI was amazing. The country, people and volunteer projects were unforgettable. Being immersed in the local Nepalese culture to teaching on the projects was a a great experience and very rewarding. Coming from the UK where western life can be depressing and full of ungrateful people to Nepal with all its challenges (crossing the road can be a life threatening hazard!) where people are happy, grateful, willing to help each other, the sense of community is overriding. It is a magical place. I can't wait to return.

They brought a lot of joy and motivation to the classroom.

I was inspired by the life experience that the women had. We definitely learned from each other. They do not have the same academic privilege that we have but they knew so much about planting vegetables, how to deal with snakes and they brought a lot of joy and motivation to the classroom.
