Although gender equality has come a long way for women from disadvantaged communities in South Africa, there is still quite a lot that needs to be done to ensure they are given equal opportunities and skills to participate actively and effectively in the South African economy. In the traditional township and rural culture, gender discrimination stems from patriarchal cultural and religious beliefs. GVI aims to assist in gender equality through various educational, healthcare, and income initiatives. We also aim to facilitate and encourage dialogues between empowered women, helping them to share positive stories of change while increasing the opportunity for them to become more involved in key community issues.

October 11, 2024by: Dominika SztiorcProgram: Women's Empowerment Project in Cape TownThe base in Limpopo is a great place to learn about conservation and to engage with community! I would not like to miss this experience in my life, making new friendships and actually having a real positive impact. The staff are amazing, very welcoming and always make sure you are having a great time :)
had a fun night together
February 14, 2020by: Beverley - United KingdomProgram: Women's Empowerment Project in Cape Townas I have been on 2 different projects in different countries I felt you cannot really compare as they all are different, Womens Empowerment in Cape Town could have been a bit more diverse as teaching computers all day felt a bit monotonous, I would have rather did something in the morning and something different in the afternoon like we did in India. I didn't stay on base last time in India, so this time was a bit concerned how I would get on with everyone as I was the eldest. I couldn't have been happier I laughed every day and made some strong bonds with people. the food was good they catered for allergies and the cooking system was fair. games night and social night was fun where staff and volunteers played and had a fun night together. At the weekends we found different places to visit which was easy to find and get to.
I really appreciate the efforts that GVI
January 09, 2020by: Lina - United StatesProgram: Women's Empowerment Project in Cape TownI really appreciate the efforts that GVI makes in Nomzamo but I do believe that some of the overall goals and organization of the programs could use some revamping. I feel that some of the programs were not necessarily gearing at helping the community develop in a way that is sustainable but relies on a steady flow in international volunteers. I would like to see GVI offer programs which seek to train members of the community to carry on the type of work volunteers do and reduce the need for outside help in reaching community goals.
