I loved my experience with GVI!
January 02, 2019by: Victoria - CanadaProgram: NEW Volunteer Teaching In Peru
I loved my experience with GVI! Although it turned out very differently than expected, I was pleased with my time there. I wish I could have spent longer and really integrated the project and see the long term impacts. I wish there were more focus group talks or post activity chats to reflect on our role, our actions and future involvement.
I’m very proud to be a part of GVI

Overall my experience through GVI was wonderful. It wasn’t tough and tiring due to the physical labor but I learned so much about a new culture and how to properly go about volunteering in an ethical manner. I formed wonderful bonds with other individuals and would love to volunteer or even work at other GVI locations around the globe. To be perfectly honest, it was difficult living in Cusco due to the high altitude and very different living conditions. I was sick for the majority of my trip but I would say it was more based on the short duration of 3 weeks on my trip and having a hard time adapting in a short amount of time. This program would be better for individuals staying longer and have more time to acclimate (if body and immune system is sensitive like mine). Overall I’m very proud to be a part of GVI.
Peru was an incredible experience

Between the history, cultural immersion, and beautiful landscapes, Peru was an incredible experience. First and foremost because of the people - my DukeEngage group, the staff, and Chinchero community members. We also had the chance to travel around Peru over the weekends, such as to Arequipa, Puno (Lake Titicaca), Rainbow Mountain, Salineras de Maras y Moray, and the Sacred Valley. I'm also grateful that our program included Machu Picchu and can't wait to see more of the world.
