Semester in Finland

July 13, 2018by: Edward Lin - United States

My overall semester exchange program in Finland was excellent. For me, I found my experience was vastly enriched by my ability to speak the language (Finnish) from day one of my exchange. Although my level of the language was then still rudimentary, getting a head start by being able to make ask basic questions and have conversations helped me make friends, connect better, and improve faster. I loved our local coordinator in Finland, as they did a fantastic job of organizing the exchange while helping me meet other local exchange students. If you are thinking of doing this program, my advice is to learn the local language by speaking and surrounding yourself in it! It doesn’t matter if you make lots of mistakes. It will probably seem scary at first to speak in a language you don’t fully understand, but that is the only way to guarantee you won’t fail to improve!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I still participate even if I have already graduated?

Yes. On a case-by-case basis, we accept graduates for High School programs in Argentina, Austria, Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, New Zealand, and England.

Do I need to be fluent in Finnish?

No, but this study program in Finland requires at least 2 years of French language instruction. You’re not expected to be fluent, though. One of the main goals of studying abroad is to become fluent in another language while experiencing the culture and daily way of life. Your host family and school won’t expect you to be fluent right away and will help improve your language skills.

Do you offer any scholarships, financial aid, or special discounts?

Yes. Every year, we offer various scholarships for select high school program destinations. We have two Early Bird Deadline discounts each year as well. If you have hosted a student for Greenheart Exchange, you are also eligible for a Greenheart Host Family discount.

Does the program include insurance?

Yes, comprehensive medical and accident insurance will be included in the program cost. This will cover most medical expenses you might incur, like prescriptions, ER visits, doctor visits, dental accidents, and hospitalizations.
