Sports for Social Change
Use sports as a vehicle for social change for underserved children in rural Jamaica. What is work without a little play? Bring your enthusiasm and energy to this program and have the chance to enjoy the beautiful island of Jamaica through sports and service. Stay active with the children in the community, many of whom are naturally athletically gifted. Ability is not the objective. Instead, it is more important to have opportunities for fun and to build relationships. Discover how community infrastructure, poverty, and sports all intersect to form health outcomes for the children and families living in the areas where you work. Student volunteers work under the guidance and support of local physical education instructors and coaches to develop the skills and athletic gifts of children from disadvantaged backgrounds, helping them gain confidence through sports and understand the importance of working in a team. They help plan and implement sports activities including football (soccer), track and field, cricket, or netball, or just be involved in general sporting activities. New ideas and sporting suggestions are welcome.
