Global Dental Relief's Guatemala clinic kicks off in Antigua, the ancient Spanish colonial capital of Central America and Mexico. The first day in Antigua is spent walking cobblestone streets and learning about the vast history of this ancient capital. After Antigua, we begin the journey overland into the Mayan Highlands to set up our dental clinic. Spanish is only one of the languages spoken by our patients and their families, hundreds of indigenous languages are spoken throughout the region. Volunteers tend to pick up a few phrases and practice any Spanish during their work here. The six-day clinic provides essential dental and oral hygiene care to Mayan children. Lines often form before the clinic opens, with eager mothers and children awaiting their turn. After the clinic each even...

Guatemala dental clinic
April 05, 2018by: Thomas Kammer DDS - United StatesProgram: Volunteer With Children in the Mayan Highlands of GuatemalaAntigua is a wonderful village/town up in the hills at 5000ft. full of Old World Spanish architecture, culture and hospitality. Our clinic was located in a village a few miles away {Ciudad Vieja} and we saw/treated the school kids [and some of their teachers] of the village. The towns' mayor came to lunch with us and expressed his appreciation for our efforts. The towns people couldn't have been more welcoming! GDR equips and supplies the clinic in a first rate fashion allowing us dental volunteers to do first rate work. A great experience and looking forward to next time.
A rewarding and magical experience in Guatemala
September 05, 2017by: SabrinaProgram: Volunteer With Children in the Mayan Highlands of GuatemalaThis was not the first time that I had volunteered with Global Dental Relief in the Mayan Highlands of Guatemala but each time the experience brings so much more. The volunteers on each trip always make it so fun and everyone always gets along so well. The trip leaders are so organized and are available 24/7 for anything that you can think of. As a dental hygienist, being able to give back to children in need of dental treatment is beyond words. The smiles, hugs and appreciation received by not only the children but the parents make it so rewarding and special. The location of the clinic in the highlands is remote but has many basic amenities available and the people of the village are kind and welcoming. Volunteering at this location really allows you to get immersed in the true culture and life of the people within the rural villages of Guatemala. It is definitely a trip you will want to sign up for and you will not regret it.
