Global Citizen-Focused Service Learning in Mexico
Program Overview
Travel to Mérida, Mexico, and immerse yourself in the Yucatán’s rich culture through visits to weaving cooperatives, ancient Mayan ruins, cenotes, and local farms. This 7-day journey blends exploration with purpose, offering hands-on experiences that connect you with the region’s history, communities, and environment. Volunteer alongside local initiatives aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goal of increasing productivity and income for small-scale food producers—especially women, Indigenous communities, and family farmers—by supporting access to vital resources, training, and markets. GCAC's mission is to cultivate global citizen leaders through education, travel, and service opportunities, increasing mutual respect for people, places, and the planet. In this Mexico program, we focus on the service goal. Participants can take (for transferable college credit) or audit a Global Service-Learning and Citizenship self-paced, online course designed to impart knowledge of local, national, and/or global issues and illuminate the interconnectedness and interdependency of the global community.

How safe is travel to Mexico?
Safety is our #1 priority. We begin before we ever leave – monitoring what’s happening in the area and hearing directly from our in-country partners. We partner with local experts, stay in safe areas, and our staff is trained to handle any situation. You’ll also be part of a group, so you’re never alone.
What if I don’t speak Spanish well or at all?
No problem! You don’t need to know Spanish to participate. We’ll have translators, and many locals speak English. Learn a few phrases before you go and then get ready, you’ll get lots of smiles for your efforts. For those learning Spanish, traveling to Mexico means you’ll enjoy speaking in the heart language of Merida.
What if I've never traveled internationally before?
This trip is perfect for first-time travelers! Our team is with you every step of the way, from the airport to every destination. We’ll guide you and help you feel comfortable.
Will the volunteer work really make a difference?
Yes! We work directly with local organizations that have long-term projects. You’ll be contributing to real causes, whether it’s wildlife rescue or community support.
