Corals Of Mikindani

Corals of Mikindani is a small-scale marine conservation project based in Mikindani, on the remote southern coast of Tanzania. Founded in 2020, our mission is to protect and restore local marine ecosystems while giving people the knowledge and practical skills to become active participants in ocean conservation.

Coral reef restoration is at the heart of our work. We maintain underwater nurseries, transplant corals onto degraded reefs, monitor and maintain restoration sites, control coral predators and algal competition, and continuously test and adapt restoration techniques to local conditions. Our work also extends beyond corals through marine education, beach clean-ups, citizen science, support for scientific research, and sustainable livelihood initiatives with the local community.

Participation and education are central to our approach. International volunteers work alongside our local team and contribute directly to ongoing field activities while learning about coral reefs and wider marine conservation issues.

Corals of Mikindani was created by the team behind Eco2 Diving, our locally based dive centre. Eco2 Diving provides the diving expertise, training, equipment and logistical support needed for our underwater conservation work. This close relationship allows us to welcome experienced divers as well as complete beginners and train them to participate safely and effectively in marine conservation.
