CLI's study abroad program combines accredited university coursework with one-on-one Mandarin instruction in Guilin, a city in southern China known for its karst mountains and the Li River. Students earn college credit through Guangxi Normal University (GXNU), CLI's academic partner, and receive an official GXNU transcript for transfer to their home university.
Most instruction at CLI is one-on-one, so lessons move at your pace, not the pace of a 30-person classroom. Students choose a standard or intensive track based on how many weekly hours of Chinese they want. Those who need non-language credits can add English-taught courses, or they can put every credit toward Mandarin. The optional Pengyou Program pairs each student with a local GXNU student for language exchange and a built-in friend group.
Guilin is a deliberate choice. Unlike Beijing or Shanghai, few people here speak English, so students use Chinese to order food, take the bus, and make friends from day one. CLI has operated in Guilin since 2009 and has hosted 5,000+ students from 50+ countries. Semester, academic year, summer, and winter sessions are available, and fees cover tuition, housing, and airport pickup.
