Program Overview

Every class is one-on-one, built around our 75/25 communicative method: 75% real conversation, 25% grammar. Lessons adapt daily to each student's pace, goals, and interests, rather than following a fixed group curriculum.

Students live with a carefully vetted host family within walking distance of the school, eating meals together and practicing Spanish outside the classroom every day. Afternoon cultural activities — cooking classes, hikes to nearby hot springs and volcanoes, market visits — turn the whole city into a classroom.

Unlike Antigua, Xela is a working Guatemalan city where Spanish, not tourism, is still the daily language — making it one of the more authentic places in Central America to reach fluency quickly. Programs run year-round, from one week to several months, and can include DELE/SIELE exam preparation or university credit through our partnership with Westminster University.

Celas Maya is an Instituto Cervantes-accredited Spanish school in Quetzaltenango (Xela), Guatemala — teaching Spanish since 1999. As an official DELE and SIELE examination center, we combine academic rigor with real cultural immersion.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Get answers to all the most common questions about Celas Maya.

Do I need any prior Spanish knowledge to join?

No. Classes are 100% one-on-one, so your teacher builds the course around your actual level from day one — whether you're a complete beginner or already conversational. Everyone starts with a short placement assessment before classes begin.

Can I start any day, or only on specific dates?

Since every class is one-on-one, you can start any Monday year-round — no waiting for a group intake date. Program length is flexible too, from one week to several months.

What's included in the homestay, and how far is it from the school?

Homestays include a private room and three meals a day, seven days a week, with a host family vetted by Celas Maya. All homestays are within walking distance of the school in Zone 1 of Quetzaltenango (Xela).

Is Xela safe for international students, and how is it different from

Yes — Xela is Guatemala's second-largest city and a safe, working Guatemalan city where Spanish is still the everyday language, unlike more tourist-oriented Antigua. Students walk to class, to host families, and to daily activities without issue.

Can this program count toward university credit or exam certification?

Yes. Celas Maya is an official DELE and SIELE examination center, and we partner with Westminster University to offer transferable academic credit for students who need it.
