ABI Sydney Internship

September 11, 2024by: William Higo - Australia

My internship in Sydney has been an amazing adventure. After graduating, I wanted to dive make a start in my career but hit a few bumps along the way. That’s when I signed up for the ABI program, which really came through for me. They helped me connect with companies and agencies in Sydney and got me ready for the internship by refining my resume, updating my portfolio, and keeping in touch with potential employers. When I first arrived in Sydney, I was a bit unsure of myself, but the company I interned with was very supportive and helped me adjust to the new environment. Over the months, I started with smaller tasks but gradually took on more important work. Overall, it was a fantastic experience, and I’m really grateful to ABI for helping me get started as a designer.

Great experience - I learnt so much!

Although the cost of the program is pricey, I would say this would greatly benefit people who are lacking relevant experience for creative industries! The ABI team was really helpful and I was able to land an internship that opened up many doors for me after. As someone who’s always dreamt of working in Sydney, I personally found this worth it!

Such a rewarding experience!

The whole experience was very rewarding, from the ABI coaching to the actual internships. It was really helpful to have the online coaching, as well as being able to speak to industry professionals to give insights and help you set your professional goals. The ABI team was very supportive and encouraging at every step of the way. I ended up being able to intern with two different companies during my time - Wasamedia and Ginger & Smart. Not only did I learn a lot of new professional and personal skills, I also got hired as a full time junior graphic designer at the end of my internship.

I learned and experienced so much!

I recommend to engage with this company if you're interested in opportunities aboard and need help finding your footing. My internship was at a fantastic firm called Alexander and Co, where I had the most fabulous experience. I completed 3 months of my internship at this company where I learned and experienced a lot things, could not have gotten this without Art Bound Initiative! They go above and beyond to support you in terms of pre-internship training, networking skills, visa wise, accomodation and anything else you could possible think of. The confidence they give you after this experience is truly something I will never forget. Thank you Ginda, Laura and Zulfa for the never ending support and I'm so glad to be a part of this community now.

My first internship with ABI has been very supportive! From the first steps of preperation and coaching to interviews and placement, ABI mentored and directed me towards my internship with “Romance was Born“ where I have gained creative industry experience and has given me tools to grow in the industry. Thank you ABI!

Productive and fun

The modules were wonderful in preparing me for my internship. Ginda and all the team at ABI make sure all your needs and wants can be met. My internship was online and in Sydney and I was always made to feel like I was part of the team. The internship was highly productive and I was pushed to learn new ways of tackling problems that the agency I was interning at was facing with a particular project. Joining the ABI was the best decision I've made in my professional development, I was able for the first time use what I had learnt at university and apply it into the real world.

Probably the most beneficial opportunity in the whole of my University life!

I learnt things that I never thought I needed. From the preparation steps, to setting up a network on LinkedIn and to getting your profile out there, ArtBound helped with it all. The whole process took the mystery away from finding an internship in our forever evolving and competitive creative industry. I now feel as though I am a step ahead, now working as a Junior Designer for the Company that ArtBound helped me to intern for!

ArtBound Initiative was instrumental in my success in obtaining my internship, but also in helping me become more aware of what companies and people look for in candidates, without this assistance and guidance and meetings to fine tune my portfolios and resume, it would have been a lot harder to get into the industry and make the connections that I know have.

My internship placements with ArtBound Initiative

ArtBound Initiative is a great support network to be apart of, they have helped me clarify the career paths best suited for me to enter and how to put it into action. They are really communicative regarding the placement process, informing any opportunities suited to me. As a media arts production student, my first internship placement at Inck Merchandise was not exactly what I had originally set on (due to COVID-19), but it was still a worthwhile experience, allowing me to start video editing in a professional setting for the company's marketing activities and branching out of my retail experience. I am still in contact with them from periodically for any video marketing freelance work they may need, as their main focus in operations are in branded merchandising. After production companies were starting to get busy again and recover from the pandemic effects, ArtBound was able to put me through to Found At Sea, a video production company that is more up my alley. In my time at Found At Sea, I was able to help out with putting together client treatments, creative development, coordinating pre-production (casting, sourcing wardrobe, call sheets, etc.) and being on set. I always look forward to going into the office! I understand that those interested in the ArtBound Initiative may feel iffy about program costs, which is a valid concern - though in my experience, the people (particularly Laura and Ginda) have made it very worthwhile for someone who wasn't even sure if they could even take a step into the industry :) Thank you ABI!

Although I did not go overseas, my domestic internship was an excellent experience! The team was very supportive of me and helped me through every aspect of my internship. The internship provided me with useful insights and the workings of being a marketer as well as running a marketing agency.

Becoming part of ABI program was one of my best experiences over summer. A very friendly and professional group of people that not only helped me to create my portfolio and resume, but also they found me an internship suitable to my goals and objectives in Sydney. They offered their help in every step of moving to Sydney and adjusting to the new living situation!

ArtBound is a fantastic program that I'd recommend to anyone who's able to participate in it. It's helped me become much more confident in both my career trajectory and in myself as an employable individual. The sessions I had with Laura before my internship were so invaluable and helped me build an attractive portfolio and succinct resume. They also allowed me to establish a great working relationship with my employers during my internship, and I felt confident that I would be able to complete tasks to the best of my ability. Ginda was also fantastic at making sure I was on top of all my tasks prior to the internship, and checking in with me during my internship to make sure i was having a great experience.

I am very grateful to have experienced my placement with an Interior Design studio that prioritised my learning, and forced me into new situations that would help my growth in all facets of the industry - including, but not limited to, software techniques and how to present myself to suppliers and other companies. There are so many facets to the industry that I had not realised required specific attention to, and so it has been very useful to be able to see and work on these first hand. I also had countless opportunities to go onto multiple sites and it's super educational seeing the changes made from the drawings I have created. Crazy!

A persuasive experience

I took an internship within my own city, Sydney. Despite Covid resulting in my last couple of weeks of residing remotely i was willing to make the most of it. I enjoyed my time at persuaders in the first three weeks, i was eager to learn all the methods and tactics within an actual workplace. with fully produced work i was able to discuss with my supervisor what i could apply to my own designs, different perspectives and textures. I wasn't able to enjoy the internship as much I would of liked, specifically around the Christmas time when covid hit Sydney and we were under restrictions to reduce travel. I was able to keep up with the work load, ask my supervisor questions build initiative and broaden my perspective. I believe i was benefited through the information i receive. Communication is an important part of being in the work force, without it, work can barely be accomplished and systematic procedures wouldn't continue so fluidly. So by working remotely despite lack of physical preparedness and social face to face discussion. To work on a remote basis allowed me to develop file preparation and list setups. Though being in my own room felt too distracting. Overall, i enjoyed the internship despite the changes, i learned a lot and was able to connect a lot with my co-workers , understanding their own journeys and how it helped them in where they are today.

A great opportunity

Artbound Initiative provided me a crucial foot in the door to my creative industry, and circumvented the traditional problems of trying to get my voice heard as a student. They trained and prepped me, got me into contact with multiple fantastic companies, which lead to two internships, one of which has lead to some longer term work. The fundamental reversing of the dynamic between folks in the industry and students, so that I had companies asking me for interviews and not vice versa, has made the process of getting work experience far more stress-free than it could've been. Would happily recommend to anyone else.
