Bali & Sumatra: Protecting Reefs & Rainforest | ARCC Program
by: ARCC Programs
Join us for an unforgettable journey that immerses us in Bali’s vibrant culture and the pristine natural landscapes of Northern Sumatra. Our adventure begins in Sumatra, where we explore the rainforest and observe orangutans in their natural habitat. Working alongside rangers and NGO partners, we contribute to habitat restoration efforts for not only Sumatran orangutans but also Sumatran tigers and Pygmy elephants. This hands-on experience allows us to rehabilitate vital ecosystems and deepen our understanding of wildlife conservation. Next, we transition to Northern Bali and the spiritual village of Ubud. Here, we earn our PADI SCUBA certification in the tranquil waters of Lovina before collaborating with a local marine biologist to help restore coral structures. This immersive program blends wildlife conservation with cultural experiences, making it perfect for those passionate about protecting the environment while embracing new cultures. Join us to make a real impact and create lasting memories!

Life-changing
August 24, 2016by: GigiThis was one of the most life-changing and inspiring trips or experiences I have ever had. I met incredible people who were so enlightening. We did the most insane things that you would not be able unless you are on one of these specific programs. Also, everything that I learned, not only about myself, but about the world as a whole, was so valuable and amazing.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the service projects like?
In our program, we engage in two impactful service initiatives: Orangutan Habitat Restoration and Reef Conservation in Northern Bali. Teaming up with our NGO partners, we transform illegal palm oil plantations into healthy orangutan habitats by cultivating seedlings and planting native trees. Along the coastline, we work alongside marine scientists to combat ocean issues through beach cleanups, coral planting, and constructing artificial reefs.
Where will we sleep?
During this program, we sleep in various accommodations: hotels, rustic camping shelters, a jungle lodge, and dorm-style bungalows.
Do I need a visa?
For our Sumatra & Bali program, we will purchase a Visa Upon Arrival, which costs $35 at the airport in Medan, Indonesia. Please be sure to have $35 in an envelope in your carry-on bag on the first day of the program so that we can ensure a smooth visa process upon arrival. This visa will allow us to stay in Indonesia for the entirety of our program.
What is the food like?
Indonesian food is one of the most vibrant, colorful, and flavorful foods worldwide. We will have the opportunity to sample traditional Indonesian cuisines such as Rendang (spicy meat), Nasi Goreng (fried rice), and satay (skewered and grilled meat) throughout our program. Vegetarians and medical dietary requirements (i.e. allergies) are catered for. Students should inform ARCC of any dietary needs before the start of the program.
What is the transportation like once we are in Indonesia?
We use a variety of transportation on the Bali & Sumatra program. We travel by private buses and vans arranged by our in-country partner.
