Volunteer Teaching in Tanzania
by: AMANI HOSTEL
Engage in volunteer teaching in Tanzania and help build a better future for vulnerable children. Although children make up over 50 percent of the population in Tanzania, they do not get a proportionate budget from the government. Children welfare is largely covered by the private sector of NGOs, community and family. Tanzania is experiencing significant economic growth in some sectors, such as tourism and mining, but very minimal growth in the Agriculture sector on which most of the children’s families depend for their living. The English language is commonly used in Tanzania, a former British colony. There is not enough quality English education available in the country though. Volunteer teachers must note that they will not be teaching based on Western standards with tight schedules, pre-made education materials, and so on. They may also provide assistance with games, drawing lessons, music, sports, and other activities. Public schools close during the following periods, during which volunteers can teach at an orphanage or at a private school: June 15th – July 27th Sep 19th – Oct 10th Dec 15th – Jan 1st
