Program Overview

Arusha Volunteers offers a surgery elective program that is ideal for students interested in surgery. Participants get the chance to have significant hands-on experience in both major and minor surgery and in more specialized surgical areas, depending on the type of elective placement and the interests of the student.

Given the integrated management in most hospitals in developing countries and the limited resources and health care staffing constraints, students will have a vast exposure to various surgical disciplines as they rotate through the hospital during their placement in the following areas:

- General Surgery
- Podiatric Surgery
- Orthopedic Surgery
- Burn Surgery
- Trauma and Emergency Surgery
- Surgical Oncology
- Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
- Rural Surgery
- Pediatric Surgery

Program Highlights

Get involved in pre-operative decision-making.
Get the chance to observe and under a supervisor, perform various procedures on foot, ankle and lower leg, administer procedures focusing on disorders of the lower extremities, and the like.
Have the opportunity to participate in diagnosis and active treatment of patients.
Participate in burn-related critical care, fluid and electrolyte resuscitation, review of hematological indices, and other highly specialized treatments.
Be an integral part of the surgical team and participate in evaluating and managing pre- and post-operative pediatrics surgical conditions.
