Program Overview

Granada was the last Moorish kingdom to fall in the reconquest of 1492 and the legacy of Spain’s 800 years under Islamic rule permeates every corner of the city. The showstopper is the Alhambra Palace – one of the best examples of Islamic architecture and craftsmanship in the world. Nestled at the foot of the Sierra Nevada, Granada is both serene in its setting and exhilarating in its spirit, monuments, and culture.

Earn 3 credits on this January term program with AIFS Abroad studying the impact of Al-Andalus (Muslim Spain) on Spanish history, tradition, and language through a series of classes and visits. You will learn about the most important events of the period and visit the most significant monuments and locations, exploring the concept of Islam while drawing these connections together to understand how the Moors influenced culture, literature, art, and architecture. A taster Arabic lesson will give you some essential communication skills before you visit Morocco.

Highlights include a 3-day excursion to Morocco, North Africa, to learn about the ancestry of the Moors who ruled in Spain.
